Lenovo has released an update to the Moto G5 Plus that installs the August 2017 Android security patch along with a number of improvements. While the installation of the software upgrade improves the security of the handset, it is still likely at risk to the BlueBorne vulnerability. The fix for the security flaw was incorporated by Google in the September 2017 security patch, and there is no word yet from the smartphone manufacturer on when the device will receive this patch. Lenovo is also including with the software upgrade the necessary enhancements to the emergency calling functionality and improvements to the overall system stability.

The smartphone maker provided the owners of the Moto G5 Plus two ways to download and install the installation package. The first option is to wait for a notification to appear stating that update is ready to be installed. Once the message appears, the user should tap “Yes, I’m in.” to begin downloading the software package and then selecting the “Install Now” option to restart the device and finish the process. Another option is to go to the device settings and tap on the System Updates option found in the About Phone section. Lenovo advises its customers to download the installation file when the handset is connected to a Wi-Fi network and to check if the device’s battery has at least 50 percent charge before the installation begins. In addition, the files and images stored in the smartphone should be backed up to prevent loss of data.

The Moto G5 Plus is powered by the Snapdragon 625 chipset, which is composed of an octa-core ARM Cortex A53 CPU with a maximum frequency of 2.0GHz and the Adreno 506 GPU. The Moto G5 Plus comes with either 2GB or 4GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of internal flash storage that can be expanded by a microSD card. The rear camera of the handset is equipped with a 12-megapixel sensor with dual focus pixels and an aperture of f/1.7, while the front shooter sports a 5-megapixel sensor. A 3,000mAh battery is included with the smartphone and the included support for the TurboPower technology makes recharging the device faster. The handset comes with Android 7.0 Nougat at launch and it will be updated to Android 8.0 Oreo within the next few months.
