Sony is now upgrading the operating system of the Sony Xperia X Premium to Android 8.0 Oreo. This comes after the Japanese smartphone manufacturer updated the Xperia XZ and the Xperia XZs to Android Oreo earlier last week. Among the new features included in the software upgrade is the Picture-in-Picture mode. This functionality allows the user to view two apps simultaneously by layering one application in a smaller window on top of another app. A new autofill feature is incorporated into the Android OS. It remembers important information like usernames, passwords, and credit card numbers, reducing the time spent in logging into websites and completing forms. Smart Text Selection, on the other hand, automatically recommends a  set of actions based on the contents of the chosen text.

Also coming with the software build is the notification dots, a functionality that alerts the user on which apps have notifications directly from the home screen. Pressing the dots will open a set of quick actions, which may comprise replying to messages or sharing content. Moreover, Google Play Protect, a security feature that scans the handset for malware and other forms of potentially damaging software, is now a part of the operating system. It is also likely that this update will include Xperia Actions, a proprietary feature that was earlier distributed to the Xperia XZ and the Xperia XZs. Xperia Actions identify the best set of device settings to improve the performance and battery life of the handset.

Sony has started distributing the software package to the Xperia X Performance although it may take a number of days before all devices are upgraded. To prevent loss of data, it is important that the files and images stored in the handset are backed to a personal computer or a microSD card. In addition, the handset’s battery should have sufficient charge to last the entire installation process. Like the Xperia XZ and the Xperia XZs, the Xperia X Performance is powered by the Snapdragon 820 chipset from Qualcomm, which is comprised of a quad-core Kryo CPU and the Adreno 530 GPU. The smartphone includes 3GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of internal flash storage. The device launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow pre-installed, although it was updated to Android 7.0 Nougat late last year.
