As most of you know by now, Google had announced Android Oreo (Go edition) for budget smartphones quite recently, and MediaTek just announced that it has become Google’s official SoC partner for Android Oreo (Go edition). Now, the Android Oreo (Go edition) is a part of Google’s Android Go project, and this version of the OS is considerably lighter than regular Android Oreo, it comes with a number of special apps which Google created for this OS, and Android Oreo (Go edition) is aimed to run on smartphones which sport between 512MB and 1GB of RAM.

Now, MediaTek says that it will provide smartphone makers with various processors which will fuel entry-level smartphones which will run Android Oreo (Go edition), processors such as MT6739, MT6737, MT6580, and so on. These processors now have board support packages available to run Android Oreo (Go edition), which is why MediaTek wanted to emphasize those chips. Google and MediaTek actually collaborate in order to make sure that the aforementioned chips work really well with Android Oreo (Go edition) on smartphones which sport between 512MB and 1GB of RAM. Now, the Android Oreo (Go edition) takes 50 percent less storage on your smartphone, and as already mentioned, Google included a number of ‘Go’ apps that are essentially lighter versions of the company’s existing applications. Those apps are: Google Go, Google Assistant Go, YouTube Go, Google Maps Go, Gmail Go, Gboard, Google Play, Chrome and the new Files Go app.

Now, via the Google Play Store app on Android Oreo (Go edition), you’ll be able to install any app you want, but the Play Store will suggest apps that are supposed to work best with your device. Having said that, this collaboration between Google and MediaTek comes soon after the two companies announced their collaboration on Google’s GMS Express, which is supposed to considerably speed up the certification process and as a result make it possible for companies to release their phones sooner. MediaTek also mentioned that Android Oreo (Go edition) smartphone which are fueled by MediaTek’s chips will hit the market in Q1 next year, and will be available all over the world.
