OnePlus is back again with a second 2017 flagship killer, this time around bringing a brand new full view screen to the mix. The overall design looks extremely similar to the OnePlus 5, with a few modifications to the design that makes it feel like a whole new phone. The most prominent design change is of course the 6.01-inch 18:9 AMOLED display on the front, which takes up almost the whole face of the phone. Because of this the fingerprint scanner has been moved to the back, in a location where most Android phones place theirs too. It’s still the same blazing fast ceramic fingerprint scanner that we’ve come to expect from OnePlus, and OnePlus has also added a new face unlock feature that competes with the best of them.
The same Snapdragon 835 chipset that practically all 2017 flagships are powered by is also in the OnePlus 5T, and it sports more RAM than almost any other flagship out there. At £449/€499/$499/$659CA the phone ships with 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64GB of UFS 2.1 dual-lane storage. For £499/€559/$559/$729CA you’ll get an upgrade to 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 dual-lane storage. There’s also a brand new dual-camera setup that’s different from the OnePlus 5, and instead of having one regular and one zoom lens, both cameras feature the same f/1.7 lens with 27.22mm focal point.
The main sensor is the same 16-megapixel Sony IMX 398 sensor with 1.2-micron size pixels, while the secondary camera is a brand new Sony IMX 376K sensor with 20-megapixel resolution and 1.0-micron size pixels. This new secondary sensor is a special low light sensor that has the ability to combine pixels for better low light shots; something a 20-megapixel sensor with 1.0-micron pixels typically can’t claim. OxygenOS powers the experience again, bringing plenty of new features to the table, all while running atop Android 7.1.1 Nougat at the time of launch. Given that the Android 8.0 Oreo beta is already available for the OnePlus 5, it’s likely we’ll see an Oreo update for the 5T soon. Is this the best value phone of the year?
