The Razer Phone will be receiving support for both HDR10 and Dolby 5.1 support through Netflix. Over the course of the past 12 months, as HDR-capable screens have increased in popularity, Netflix has been rolling out support for certain devices such as the Galaxy Note 8, LG V30, and the Sony Xperia XZ Premium. Now, Razer has announced that its first smartphone will be joining that list of smartphones, as well as a wider partnership with Netflix.
The Razer Phone is the first device of its kind boasting a screen that has a 120Hz refresh rate. This feature, alongside support for HDR visuals, has apparently led Netflix to allow it access to a special version of its Android app, which will give Razer Phone owners the option of watching any HDR10-certified content that the streaming service offers – the only requirement is a Netflix account with a premium plan. Razer’s device also comes equipped with two front-firing speakers that have been Dolby-optimized. Because of this, the device is now receiving support for the Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio standard through Netflix and will be the first smartphone to benefit from this – until now, support for the solution had been reserved for high-end Windows devices that used the Windows Netflix app. Support for the audio standard will not be limited to the dual-firing speakers thanks to the company’s THX-certified USB Type-C audio port ensuring that the device maintains a consistent performance in every situation. By supporting the two audio and picture standards, Razer’s flagship is also the first one on the market capable of viewing both HDR10 and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 content through Netflix, but the partnership between the companies doesn’t stop there.
The gaming-focused company announced that it will soon be pushing out an over-the-air update to Razer Phone users which will include Netflix as a pre-installed app. Alongside this will be the introduction of a widget that should help make access to Netflix’s content much simpler, while the Razer Phone itself will also receive a few firmware tweaks aimed at improving its audiovisual performance. No specific availability window has yet been attached to the upcoming software package.
