Sony’s latest mid-range phones are now official, and while these ones don’t quite line up with some predictions that have been made leading up to CES, they certainly do represent a new design language. The Xperia L2, Xperia XA2 and Xperia XA2 Ultra all represent Sony’s dedicated to the mid-range, providing great looking form factors with a brand new rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. While this may disappoint some that enjoyed the side power button mounted scanner, US Xperia fans will absolutely rejoice at the fact that all three of these phones will ship with activated fingerprint scanners worldwide. That’s a huge departure from where the Xperia brand was just a few months ago with the release of the Xperia XZ1, and it certainly shows a big step in the right direction for Sony.
While there are no official price points for any of the three new phones just yet, availability is in just a few short weeks, and we’ll certainly be finding out more there in the near future. For now though, aside from the new design language, you’ll be getting some hardware upgrades on the Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra for sure. Both models come equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC, microSD card slot for storage expansion, a USB Type-C port at the bottom, and Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. Both screens are 1080p resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio, but the XA2’s screen is 5.2-inches diagonally, while the XA2 Ultra’s screen measures in at 6-inches. The XA2 Ultra also gets camera upgrades in the form of OIS built into that rear-facing 16-megapixel sensor, as well as a dual camera setup around the front.
Sony will be offering the XA2 with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, while the XA2 Ultra ships with 4GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of storage. You’ll also find a battery size difference here too; 3,300mAh on the Xperia XA2, and 3,580mAh on the Xperia XA2 Ultra. The Xperia L2 is slightly lower key in its specs, but visually you won’t find a whole lot of differences. A 5.5-inch 720p screen takes up most of the front, with a single 8-megapixel 120-degree angle camera above it. It’s also ships with Android 7.1.1 Nougat instead of Oreo, but likely we’ll see this update in the near future. Check out the hands on video below!
