At CES 2018 Sony is showcasing three new smartphones that are all largely aimed at the mid-range market. Two of which have already been announced as the latest additions to the Xperia XA line, the Xperia XA2 and the XA2 Ultra. The third has also now been confirmed as the Sony Xperia L2, a follow up to last year’s Xperia L1 smartphone – which was announced at MWC 2017. Compared to the new XA2 smartphones, this new L smartphone looks to be one that offers a solid camera experience, at an affordable price.

In terms of the specs, the Xperia L2 is now confirmed as coming equipped with a 5.5-inch display along with a 1280 x 720 resolution. This is a display that the company regards as ‘borderless’ due to the side bezels being on the minimal side. As opposed to the number of ‘bezel-less’ devices that have come through in the last year where the top and bottom bezels are as minimal as the side bezels. This is not the case however with the L2 which still houses significant top and bottom non-screen sections. Inside, this new phone features 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, and is powered by a currently unnamed quad-core processor (clocking at 1.5 GHz). As for the cameras, the Xperia L2 packs in a 13-megapixel rear camera (which supports 3 x image zooming), while the front boasts an “all-new” 8-megapixel camera equipped with a 120-degree super-wide-angle lens. Resulting in a front-facing camera that is as suitable for groupfies, as it is for selfies. Additional features include a fingerprint sensor (which is now positioned on the back of the device – as it is with the new XA2 smartphones), a 3,300 mAh capacity battery, a microSD card slot for expanding the storage (up to 256GB), various camera and audio software tweaks, and Android 7.1.1 (Nougat). On the design side, the new Xperia L2 boasts a metallic design and a curved back. Other than the re-positioning of the rear camera and the fingerprint sensor, much of the overall look of the L2 is rather similar to last year’s Xperia L1.

At present Sony has yet to confirm exact pricing for the Xperia L2 but has stated this phone will arrive “at an affordable price.” With the company also confirming that more details on the price will become available at the local level and much closer to when availability begins. Speaking of which, Sony has confirmed the start of the global availability rollout will begin in February although without mentioning where. For interested buyers in the US, Sony has confirmed the Xperia L2 will be coming to the US as a single-SIM option. Lastly, the Sony Xperia L2 is also due to become available to buy in three different color options (dependent on region) consisting of Black, Gold, and Pink – as shown below.
