SQUARE ENIX Co., Ltd.’s long-awaited Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition has finally left the pre-registration section of the Google Play Store and is now available for download. Before anybody gets too excited though, this game is not going to be completely free to play. The first chapter is included with the free download at no cost, but each chapter after that will need to be purchased. Furthermore, in-app purchases range from $0.99 to $19.99, so fans of the series should expect to pay at least $9 to completely play through each of the game’s 10 chapters. That’s not necessarily unexpected, given some of the prices of the developer’s other titles and the AAA title this mobile game is based on, but it is worth taking note of.

Setting the caveats aside for a moment, the story in Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition takes place in the same world as the latest Final Fantasy console title – which bears the same name. Gameplay has been simplified to include simple taps for every action from moving to battling. Unlike the console version, the graphics have also been reworked to be more suitable for mobile hardware. Aside from those changes, the gameplay mechanics are going to be instantly recognizable to anybody who has played an action RPG previously and should be easy to pick up on for new players. In the meantime, players take on the role of a group of protagonists led by Noctis, the crown prince of Lucis. Their journey begins as the Prince leaves home to wed the princess of long-time rival nation Niflheim. Of course, it doesn’t take long before things go terribly wrong and players are forced to battle their way through to save the world.

Unfortunately, although this title is meant to work on most devices running Android 5.0 or newer, it simply isn’t going to be accessible to everybody. That’s because it requires at least 2GB of RAM or higher and at least 5GB of storage for the low-resolution version of the game to function. With the high-resolution setting toggled, players will need additional space for a further 3GB of app assets to download. Players will also need a CPU which is clocked to at least 1.5GHz if they want to get the best experience.
