HMD had introduced five new smartphones yesterday, and we’re here to take a closer look at the most powerful of them all, the Nokia 8 Sirocco. We were able to get some hands-on time with the Nokia 8 Sirocco during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, and this is one of the best-looking smartphones Nokia had introduced to date, if not the best-looking one. The Nokia 8 Sirocco is made out of glass and steel, its frame is made out of steel, while glass is included on the back of the device. The Nokia 8 Sirocco also comes with rather thin bezels, and it sports a curved display, which makes it one of the few non-Samsung smartphones to sport such a panel.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco sports considerably sharper sides than the Galaxy S9, and truth be said, it’s quite slippery. Both the front and back sides of this phone are curved, while the device features a dual camera setup on the back, along with a fingerprint scanner. The phone’s rear-facing cameras protrude quite a bit, actually, while a dual-tone LED flash is included next to those two snappers. Nokia’s branding sits on the back of the device, and it’s also worth saying that the glass on the back of the Nokia 8 Sirocco is quite reflective. The phone does sport some bezel on the sides, but those bezels are barely visible thanks to the fact that the display is curved. Bezels above and below the display are thicker than the ones on the Galaxy S9, as expected, but they’re thin enough not to make the device look weird or anything of the sort. Now, for those of you who did not know, this is one of Nokia’s Android One smartphones, which means that it comes with vanilla Android from the get-go. In addition to the Nokia 8 Sirocco, the Nokia 7 Plus also ships with Android One, and that handset was announced yesterday as well.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco does have rather powerful internals to brag about as well, though it is not fueled by the Snapdragon 845, but the Snapdragon 835 instead. The device also packs in 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. 12 and 13-megapixel shooters are included on the back of the device, while a single 5-megapixel camera sits on its front side. Speaking of phone’s cameras, ZEISS and Nokia partnered up once again, and the Nokia 8 Sirocco comes with ZEISS optics. The device is IP67 certified as well, on top of everything. A 3,260mAh non-removable battery is here, and it supports both Quick Charge 4.0 and wireless charging. The device features a 5.5-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) pOLED display, with 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top of it. Android 8.0 Oreo comes pre-installed on the device, and as already mentioned, this is vanilla Android we’re looking at here.
