Hands-On: BLUBOO S2 With Rotating Camera & The BLUBOO S3 – MWC 2018

BLUBOO is one of the companies who is currently showcasing a number of its smartphones at this year’s MWC event. We were able to get a little hands on time with some of those devices and two of the newer ones that are specifically worth taking a closer look at are the BLUBOO S2 and the BLUBOO S3. While they are both very different to each other, they are both quite compelling in their own right.

Of the two, the BLUBOO S2 is certainly the most novel as this is a smartphone which not only places a good deal of its focus on its camera features, but also the camera hardware. As while other companies have looked to include more cameras on their smartphones (in some cases resulting in as many as four cameras), BLUBOO has gone the reverse route by removing a camera. The reason being, the camera BLUBOO has included is actually a rotating camera. Therefore, while the camera naturally adopts the position of a rear camera, the user can at any time flip the camera over for it to assume the stance of a front-facing camera. One of the major benefits of this design is that there is no sacrificing in the quality of the front-facing camera compared to the rear camera – which is typically the case with smartphones. Instead, users can expect an equal experience and quality of images regardless of which side of the phone an image is captured with. Likewise, the knock on effect of this design is when the camera is rested in its natural position on the back, the front looks a lot cleaner thanks to the reduction in top bezel. Besides the 21-megapixel camera, the only other confirmed specs at the moment is the inclusion of a 6-inch display along with an 18:9 aspect ratio resulting in a 2160 x 1080 resolution, as well as a fairly substantial 4,300 mAh battery, and Android 8.1 (Oreo).

As for the BLUBOO S3, while this one does not come with anything quite as unique as a rotating camera it is a device that looks to be on trend through the inclusion of an edge-to-edge display. In fact, the top and bottom aspects while still more pronounced than a true all-screen design, are still on the minimalist side. Although one area where the minimalist approach is certainly not in effect is the battery department as the BLUBOO S3 manages to pack in a monstrous 8,300 mAh capacity battery. Though, the issue with packing in such a heavy capacity battery is this is not the thinnest of phones. By the same token is not overly thick either, but its thickness will likely be something buyers will want to take into consideration before picking up. Battery and bezels aside, the BLUBOO S3 does look to add to its stylish demeanor through its textured back cover. It also so worth noting that the on the back of the device a dual camera setup can be found, along with the fingerprint sensor.

These are both fairly new phones and as a result BLUBOO has yet to fully disclose the price of either, or their availability. So it is unclear how much value will be on offer with these phones when they do become generally available. Although considering BLUBOO is a company which aims to be competitive in general it is expected both phones will continue that emphasis and the price to be one of their additional selling points – in spite of their respective rotating camera and big battery.
