In addition to the Xperia XZ2, Sony has also announced the Xperia XZ2 Compact here at Mobile World Congress. It’s a smaller version of the Xperia XZ2, with very few differences. Of course, the main difference is the materials used. The Xperia XZ2 Compact has a polycarbonate back and frame, instead of a metal and glass back. Which gives it more of the look of the older Sony smartphones, but it still looks pretty nice.

Sony has opted to keep the camera towards the top of the backside of the Xperia XZ2 Compact, unlike the Xperia XZ2 where it’s a bit further down. Now it does still have the fingerprint sensor on the back, below the camera. It’s placed where your index finger will usually rest, making it easy to use. Sony has also kept the dedicated camera button on the Xperia XZ2 Compact, as well as the volume rocker and power button, all on the right side of the device. On the bottom of the Xperia XZ2 Compact is where you’ll find the USB-C port. Like the Xperia XZ2, there’s no headphone jack here. So you’ll be forced to use a dongle, or join the Bluetooth world.

In the hand, the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact is very small, compared to other smartphones available today. It has a 5-inch display that uses a 18:9 aspect ratio (it’s also full HD plus now, marking the first time a Compact model has had a full HD display), but still has some somewhat large bezels on-board. It is also pretty thick, which is nice, as it allows space for a larger battery, but also makes it easier to keep it in your hand and not slip out. The Xperia XZ2 Compact does have front-facing speakers, so you are getting some great audio out of this one, and it has support for Hi-Res Audio as well.

The good thing about the Xperia XZ2 Compact is that it has all of the same specs as the larger Xperia XZ2. Something that most other smartphone makers still don’t do, when it makes a smaller version of its flagship. The Xperia XZ2 Compact has the Snapdragon 845 inside, with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There is also a micro SD card slot available for expanding storage, which Sony says can support up to 400GB of additional storage. There’s no Qi Wireless Charging here like on the Xperia XZ2, but that shouldn’t be an issue since it does have Quick Charge support. The Xperia XZ2 Compact does also support HDR content like the Xperia XZ2, and it can also shoot in 4K HDR, which is the first smartphone in the world to be able to do that.

Sony will be offering up the Xperia XZ2 Compact in four colors as well: black, silver, green and pink. While the Xperia XZ2 Compact does not look as nice as the Xperia XZ2 due to its polycarbonate back, it is a great smartphone to pick up for those that are looking for something smaller, that is still powerful. Sony has not yet announced pricing or availability yet for the Xperia XZ2 Compact, so it may be a few more months before it is actually available.
