Sikur has announced a new smartphone at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, the SIKURPhone, and we were able to get some hands-on time with the device. This handset was made by the same company that released the GranitePhone, which was a security-focused device. The GranitePhone was announced way back in 2015, and the SIKURPhone is basically a more modern variant on it, this handset is also focused on security, very much so. Sikur actually refers to this phone as the ‘evolution of the GranitePhone’.
The device itself looks nice, though it doesn’t exactly offer a groundbreaking design. The phone is made out of metal, while it utilizes on-screen buttons. Truth be said, it resembles the Nexus 4 a bit, it sports that industrial design which people either love or hate. Side bezels on this handset are not that thick, while the phone has quite a bit of bezel above and below its display. Interestingly enough, both its power / lock and volume rocker keys can be found on the left, while the device features a single camera on its back side. An LED flash is also included on the back of the device, and the same goes for a fingerprint scanner. Now, the device is powered by the company’s very own operating system called ‘SIkurOS’. This handset also comes with a built-in cryptocurrency wallet (SIKURWallet), and that’s pretty much everything we know about this operating system at the moment. It is also worth noting that Sikur is a German cybersecurity company, while it has offices around the world, and it’s quite interesting that they’ve decided to release yet another smartphone.
Now, the company also mentioned that this phone was submitted to ‘rigorous hacking tests’ in order to make sure that the phone is secure enough, and not even the HackerOne team was able to get any info off of the device. The device sports a 5.5-inch fullHD (1920 x 1080) display, along with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of native storage. As you can see, this phone comes with a regular display aspect ratio, 16:9, nothing fancy. MediaTek’s MT6750 64-bit octa-core processor is included here, and this is actually MediaTek’s entry-level chip which was announced quite some time ago. A 2,800mAh non-removable battery is also a part of this package, while you will find two 13-megapixel cameras on the back of the SIKURPhone, though we still do not have all the info regarding that sensor. A 5-megapixel camera is included for selfies and video calls, while the device itself is priced at $799, at least during the pre-order period. Sikur said that it will sell only 20,000 units of the SIKURPhone at that price point, so if you’re looking to get one despite its high price point, well, do note that the device will become available for pre-order on February 27, later today. The SIKURPhone may be quite expensive, but the company vouches for its security, and if you’re one who puts security above anything else, you may be interested in the SIKURPhone.
