Intel plans to make a splash in the 5G connected devices market by partnering with cellular carriers and hardware partners. The world of 5G is just around the corner and Intel sees themselves as providing the essential processing power that will be necessary to enable devices with 5G connections to reach their full computing potential. In a press release today, Intel stated while at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC), they will showcase a live demonstration of 2-in-1 5G devices. Collaborations with HP, Lenovo, Dell, and Microsoft, will bring the Intel XMM 8000 line of 5G multimode modems to consumers and businesses alike. Intel says that they hope to have their first wave of 5G multimode modems for sale on the market by the second half of 2019.

Though a primary focus, Intel knows that PCs with 5G LTE is just one of many categories that will put their lines of new modems and processors to work. Whether it be autonomous vehicles, virtual reality experiences, or smart appliances, Intel hopes to be an integral part of how the connected world stays connected while maintaining processing speeds and data transfer rates that allow new technologies to thrive. As consumers demand for faster data speeds and larger data transfers grow, Intel’s release of 5G compatible modems will be an integral part of technology growth in the coming years. At the upcoming MWC Intel will be demonstrating modems with 5GNR interoperability to the public for the first time, and look to commercialize that technology within a year or two of the demonstration.

Intel’s recent presence at the 2018 Winter Olympics wasn’t all about synchronized drone displays (though we all saw how cool that was). Intel made 5G data available to devices in PyeongChang, providing live, field-tested service at various sites in and around the Olympic Village that ran at gigabit speeds. That’s not their only, or biggest deployment either. Recently, Intel rolled out the world’s largest 5G deployment with KT Corporation, bringing to life 22 5G links at 10 separate sites which brought life to image capture viewpoints, IPTV, VR, Wi-Fi and other technologies that call for fast, reliable LTE data transfers.
