Shortly after the Samsung Galaxy S9 series was introduced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, the Korean OEM shared a new ‘Design Story’ pertaining to its latest creation. As usual, it offers a bit of a sneak peak at the creative processes that went behind the latest flagship’s design and explains some of the design elements employed by the new series. Aside from this, Samsung also reveals the importance of the number ‘9’ in many cultures where the figure represents the culmination of history and a symbol of a new era. In other words, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is, as expected, the company’s best flagship phone to date, and it could be the last of its kind before the tech giant moves to an entirely new design language.
According to the OEM, the latest flagship series was carefully shaped in order to ‘preserve the bare essence of design’ so it’s more of a refinement over the existing aesthetic rather than adopting brand new ideas. The frame separating the front and back panels protrudes slightly in order to protect the glass and was manufactured with an upgraded aluminum boasting improved resistance to scratches. The frame is also finished in Satin Gloss matching the color of the body, which can vary from Coral Blue and Midnight Black to Titanium Gray and Lilac Purple. Aside from the visual side of things, Samsung also considered how the new flagship would feel in the hand and this resulted in various minor design shifts including a slightly revamped physical key on the side, which should now facilitate one-handed usage. The curves surrounding the smartphone have been slightly reshaped to offer a more comfortable and stable grip, and while the fingerprint sensor still resides on the back panel in the same enclosure as the camera module, the unit was moved below the camera and into the center for easier reachability.
All in all, the Samsung Galaxy S9 series represents, as the OEM claims, a refinement over the already familiar design language. And judging by the company’s Sunday announcement, the latest flagship could also represent the culmination of the Galaxy S series as we know it before Samsung takes its mobile strategy to an entirely different direction next year.
