The Honor 10 is the company’s upcoming flagship handset, which will be announced in a couple of days, and while we wait for that announcement to take place, some camera samples have surfaced, along with camera info in general. This info comes from a leaked document provided by XDA’s Senior Member duraraa. Now, based on that leaked document, Honor will introduce something called ‘semantic image segmentation mode’, and that feature will be available in the Honor 10.

Now, this feature will, basically, be able to detect various scenes in your photos, multiple scenes at a time, actually. Based on that info, the phone will be able to apply different filters to images at the same time, in order to boost their quality. We have already seen scene detection features in other smartphones, but those devices are usually able to pick up on one scene only, they are able to recognize a plant, beach, and so on. The source claims that the Honor 10 will be able to detect the outlines of objects in a particular image in order to apply the right filter to each object. Semantic image segmentation allegedly takes advantage of the NPU in the Kirin 970 SoC, which will fuel the Honor 10, and all that processing will be done on-device. Now, all of this sounds really nice, but it remains to be seen how useful will it be in practice. If Honor manages to get this processing just right, semantic image segmentation mode could seriously boost images.

Now, two camera samples also leaked, the first image in the gallery down below was taken without semantic image segmentation mode, while the second one was captured with that mode switched on. As you can see, the second image is noticeably brighter, and the contrast has been boosted quite a bit as well. Now, we cannot say which image is better, it all depends on what you’re looking for, as it seems like you’re be able to get considerably different results depending on whether you switch on semantic segmentation mode, or not. The Honor 10 is rumored to sport 20 and 12-megapixel snappers, a 5.8-inch display, and a display notch. The device will be made out of metal and glass, and it will be announced in China on April 19. Honor did announce a press conference in London for May 15, and it seems likean international variant of the Honor 10 will launch there, but the company still hasn’t confirmed that info, so we’ll just have to wait in order to find out.
