The Moto G6 seeks to compete in the lower mid-range market segment and provide a lot of bang for your hard-earned money.
Motorola on Thursday took to São Paulo, Brazil, to announce its latest and already widely rumored offerings in the form of the Moto G6 series, with the company’s new lineup consisting of three devices – the Moto G6, Moto G6 Play, and the Moto G6 Plus. As expected, the Moto G6 represents some sort of a middle ground in the new family, seeking to provide consumers with the best value-to-money ratio while generally serving as a versatile and reliable handset.

Moto G6 Specs
The Moto G6 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 450 chip, an octa-core 14nm silicon clocked at a maximum operating frequency of 1.8GHz which also ships with the Adreno 560 GPU. The handset will be made available in two variants, with the base model having 3GB of RAM and 32GB of flash memory, whereas the more premium version doubles on that storage space and offers 4GB of RAM. Both are coming with a microSD card slot supporting up to 128GB of extra memory, USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The slim Home button below the screen doubles as a fingerprint reader with support for various gestures, though the previously reported NFC capabilities haven’t been included after all. Dual-SIM support is technically here but won’t be available worldwide and Motorola has yet to clarify which countries will get those models. In terms of raw processing power, the Moto G6 is obviously meant to compete in the lower mid-range segment of the smartphone market but recent technological advancements effectively guarantee that even its modest hardware will get the job done for the vast majority of consumers, and at an extremely affordable price point, at that.
Moto G6 Display
The display is one of the main selling points of the newly announced Android mid-ranger, with the device boasting a 5.7-inch IPS LCD panel advertised as the “Max Vision” screen. Much like its name implies, Motorola transitioned its G lineup to the new 18:9 (2:1) aspect ratio and the Moto G6 hence features an FHD+ resolution of 2,160 by 1,080 pixels. The Lenovo-owned phone maker says this is as much screen real estate as you can get from any modern value-oriented product with a comparable physical footprint, claiming the Moto G6’s display is ideal for media consumption due to its overall size, whereas its image format makes the handset suitable for single-handed use. The panel is protected by a sheet of Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 which should adequately safeguard it from scratches, with the OEM once again delivering a device with an “attentive” display, i.e. one that stays on so long as you’re looking at it regardless of your screen timeout settings. As was the case with previous such handsets from the company, this feature is entirely optional and can be disabled at any time.
Moto G6 Design
The overall design of the Moto G6 is in line with recent industry standards given how its elongated screen is surrounded by minimal side bezels and a relatively small forehead, though its chin remains sizeable. The back of the partially metal handset is equipped with “premium 3D glass” that reflects light in a variety of ways depending on the angle at which you’re looking at it. The entire smartphone is protected by p2i nano-coating and should hence survive rain and splashes of water without any issues, though it’s not advertised as waterproof and hence shouldn’t be treated as such. The handset has so far been confirmed as coming in Black, Deep Indigo, Blush, and Silver color options, though it remains to be seen whether all of them end up being released on a global level. Motorola’s new Android mid-ranger is 153.8 x 72.3 x 8.3mm in size and weighs in at 167g.
Moto G6 Cameras
The Moto G6 features a dual-camera setup entailing a 12-megapixel sensor and a 5-megapixel unit, as well as an 8-megapixel module mounted on the front. While the hardware part of its imaging equation isn’t anything out of the ordinary, Motorola is placing a large emphasis on the Moto G6’s software with features such as Cutout, an ability to select a custom background and apply it to any other image using artificial intelligence. Selective Focus mode is also part of the package and is essentially the same thing Samsung has been offering on its devices for a while now, allowing users to blur any parts of their images. The Moto G6 can apply augmented reality stickers to faces in real time, in addition to being able to utilize its camera to identify landmarks or other objects thanks to its Google Lens integration. Optical character recognition support powered by the same technology is also on offer here, allowing you to quickly digitize writing on a sheet of paper, sign, or any other object. The latter functionality supports English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian, though it’s presently unclear whether Motorola will expand on that list of languages moving forward.
The rear camera setup of the Moto G6 is unsurprisingly accompanied by a dual-LED (dual-tone) flash and also ships with support for some unique features such as the ability to colorize black-and-white photographs as part of its integrated editor. Motorola’s AI software can help you choose the best image out of a group of consecutively taken shots, with the smartphone also coming with a traditional manual mode. The front camera of the Moto G6 has face unlock support, its own LED flash, and offers an ultra wide-angle mode, as well as “Beautification” for smoothening out skin textures and otherwise making selfie shots more magazine cover-worthy. In overall, the cameras of the Moto G6 are a small improvement over last year’s models in terms of hardware, but a significant step forward regarding AI, with the device now boasting two much “smarter” imaging systems.
Moto G6 Battery Life
The Moto G6 is powered by a 3,000mAh battery which is advertised as being capable of lasting through an entire day on a single charge. The cell also supports the firm’s proprietary TurboPower charging technology which works with the charger that’s already bundled with the smartphone itself. In practice, you should be able to prepare a completely dead Moto G6 unit for several hours of use following a 20-minute charge.
Moto G6 Software
The Moto G6 ships with a custom implementation of Android 8.0 Oreo that boasts support for a broad range of functionalities Motorola already included in many of its previous devices. Moto Display, Night Mode, Moto Voice, Moto Actions, and Moto Key are hence all part of the newly announced package, providing users with the ability to unlock their Windows PCs using the fingerprint sensor of their smartphone or control the handset itself with gestures which effectively act as physical shortcuts. The Moto G6 offers Bluetooth 4.2, Dolby Audio support, and can play FM radio, the company confirmed. Native Google Assistant integration is on offer as well, meaning you’ll largely be able to control the device with voice commands, which isn’t unlike what Samsung offers on select Galaxy devices with Bixby. Google Photos is also the default gallery app on both the Moto G6 and every other new handset from Motorola.
Moto G6 Pricing & Availability
The Moto G6 is available for purchase in Brazil as of today and will be coming to Mexico next week. The handset will be launching in the United States and Canada “over the coming months,” with the same vague availability window being provided in the context of Europe, Asia Pacific, and (the rest of) Latin America. The Moto G6 will start at $249 and will be offered directly from Motorola, as well as a broad range of its retail partners, Amazon included.
