Plex VR has opened up support for Gear VR headsets letting anyone who owns the Samsung-produced device take advantage of the best that Plex has to offer all in virtual reality. The newly added support joins the compatible Daydream headset platform that has been available since earlier this year, so if you’ve had a chance to check out Plex VR on Daydream then you should be familiar with how things look and operate.
At the moment there is no support for headsets like the Vive or Vive Pro, or the Sony PlayStation VR, nor is there any mentioned plans to release such support for any of those headsets, but Plex does mention that support for VR platforms and its Plex VR app is here to stay, so there is always a chance that Plex will look to extend support for Plex VR even further at some point in the future. If you’ve never seen Plex VR in action before you can view what the interface looks like in the image above as well as a few of the screenshots in the gallery below.
There are a fair number of features available for Plex VR like support for 360-degree and 180-degree video content, and although you can’t watch TV and movies together with other users just yet, Plex lists that it is coming, and when users are watching something with another person there will be a voice chat feature so they can converse with each other about what’s happening. It goes without saying that to use Plex VR, you won’t just need a compatible VR headset. You’ll also need to have a Plex media server setup on your local network and have a Plex account to access any of your locally-stored content, as the VR app will need to be able to tap into this. If you have all that covered, then you should be able to dive right in.
