Debuting with the world’s first triple-camera system on a smartphone, the Huawei P20 Pro sports some incredible camera hardware. Featuring a main 40-megapixel RGB sensor with an f/1.8 lens, a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor with an f/1.6 lens, and a third 8-megapixel sensor with an f/2.4 telephoto lens, the rear camera hardware on the Huawei P20 Pro is some seriously amazing stuff. Huawei’s P20 takes the crazy specs down just a tad, packing a 12-megapixel main RGB sensor behind an f/1.8 lens, but the same 20-megapixel monochrome sensor with f/1.6 lens from the P20 Pro. This doesn’t mean the P20 takes worse pictures than the P20 Pro, however, rather it just doesn’t have quite as many features as the P20 Pro.
Among the many amazing things both phones can do, the P20 and P20 Pro are able to utilize Huawei’s new Night Mode feature, which uses Artificial Intelligent Stabilization (AIS) to take long exposure shots in a darker environment and combine them for superbly bright and detailed photos. This is something that hasn’t ever really been attempted in the industry, as we’ve seen modes with long exposures on plenty of phones, but never a phone that attempts to correct for hand jitter and other movements while taking a long exposure. This shows Huawei‘s work with the Neural Processing Units (NPU) inside of each P20 and P20 Pro, a concept that was introduced in the Mate 10 Pro but is certainly making a much bigger impact on user-facing actions here.
The P20 and P20 Pro both feature incredible detail on each camera, with excellent zoom detail and image processing as a whole. The P20 Pro ups the ante here though, with a full 40-megapixel mode that offers incredible detail levels, even when zoomed way into the distance, as well as a 3X hybrid zoom using the 8-megapixel sensor behind the telephoto lens, as well as a combination of the monochrome and main RGB sensors for added detail. You can see this hybrid mode kick in after zooming past 3x, which makes a visible jump in the picture, increasing details significantly. All in all this is an unbelievably good camera that’s well worth looking at, and you can see why in our extensive camera review video below.
