It seems like Xiaomi is planning to announce a new smartphone in India soon, the Redmi S2. This is an entry-level handset which was spotted by an XDA member in a leaked firmware. Now, thanks to the phone’s firmware, quite a few spec info surfaced, even though the phone’s image is still not available, but chances are it will resemble other Xiaomi-branded, budget phones that have been announced in recent months, devices like the Redmi 5, for example.
Having said that, the leaked files claim that the Redmi S2 will sport an HD+ (1440 x 720) LCD display, though we still do not know what size will that display be, even though chances are it will be around 5 inches, but definitely smaller than 5.5 inches. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 64-bit octa-core processor will fuel the device, the very same SoC which fuels the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi 5 Plus. This phone’s RAM status is still unknown, but leaked firmware claims it will ship with 16GB of storage, which you’ll be able to expand using a microSD card. Android 8.1 Oreo will come pre-installed on the device, while Xiaomi’s MIUI skin will be installed on top of it, MIUI 9, most probably, even though its exact version is not mentioned in the leaked firmware. A 12-megapixel shooter will be included on the back side of the Redmi S2, and we’re looking at either Sony’s IMX486 sensor here, or the OmniVision OV12A10 sensor. A 5-megapixel camera will be included on the phone’s front side, sporting Samsung’s 5MP S5K5E8 sensor. As far as camera features are concerned, EIS, Portrait Mode, and Face Unlock were all mentioned in the leaked firmware.
A 3,080mAh capacity battery will be included in the Redmi S2, while the leaked firmware explicitly mentions China and India variants of the device. It is, however, possible that Xiaomi will release this phone in some additional markets, we’ll just have to wait and see. The device’s release date was not mentioned in the leaked firmware, but the company will probably announce its release date in the near future.
