A new supposed video of the highly anticipated Xiaomi flagship has surfaced to show its under-display fingerprint scanner in action. The three-second clip doesn’t uncover the phone entirely, making it hard to judge if it indeed is the Mi 8, however, the home screen shown in the video is reminiscent of MIUI 9. The in-glass fingerprint scanner can be seen lighting up as soon as the user places their thumb on the designated area of the screen to unlock the phone within a fraction of a second. Notably, the scanner appears to have worked a tad faster in this demo than it does on the Vivo X series devices. Even if Xiaomi’s next flagship doesn’t feature an under-display fingerprint sensor, a 3D facial recognition option may come included. A facial recognition module of the Mi 8 had leaked a couple of days back, looking very similar to what was first seen on the Apple iPhone X. The improved facial recognition technology doesn’t just take a 2D image of the user, instead, it creates a 3D map of the user’s face to make the process significantly more secure. No mainstream smartphone other than the iPhone X has incorporated this tech which requires a large display notch that the Xiaomi Mi 8 is expected to feature.
Being a flagship smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi 8 is expected to boast a number of top-end internals, including a Snapdragon 845 chip, 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, and at least 64GB of UFS 2.1 storage. It is said to feature Qi wireless charging support and ship with a 4,000mAh battery. If the under-display fingerprint scanner ends up being part of the Mi 8 package, the phone will definitely have an OLED display which was earlier rumored to measure in at 5.45 inches. The Chinese company is said to be planning to market the device as the Mi 8 and not use the previously rumored Mi 7 moniker.
