The Nokia 7 is now receiving a software package that will upgrade its operating system to Android 8.1 Oreo. The device originally launched with Android Nougat, although it was upgraded to Android 8.0 Oreo earlier this year. By going up to Android 8.1 Oreo, the handset received a number of new under-the-hood features, including support for the Neural Network API, which enables the use of neural networks in more segments of the operating system. In addition, this OS upgrade makes it easier for applications to take advantage of the new Autofill framework.
Aside from the upgraded version of Google’s operating system, the software package also brings a number of new features that are specific to the Nokia 7. One of them is the “Dual SIM Dual Standby Dual 4G VoLTE” functionality which allows the smartphone to connect to two different 4G LTE networks at the same time. The update also brings the Nokia Pro Camera mode and an improved camera user interface to the Nokia 7. The Pro Camera is already supported on a number of contemporary Nokia smartphones, including the Nokia 7 Plus, and it allows the user to access a set of manual camera options. Meanwhile, the update also brings changes to the user interface of the Nokia 7, including the ability of the system theme to adapt to the color of the device’s wallpaper and the addition of a Bluetooth battery level indicator. Other new features include the Face Recognition Unlock functionality and Gaming Do Not Disturb Mode. The software upgrade also brings the May 2018 Android security patch.
The package has a file size of 698MB, although the smartphone manufacturer noted that the device should have some 1.4GB of free space before installing the operating system upgrade. Moreover, likely due to the introduction of the Nokia Pro Camera mode, the camera application settings of the device will be reset and users may have to repeat granting the necessary permissions to the app before they’re once again able to take images.
