The Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge flagship Android smartphones from 2016 finally started receiving the Android 8.0 Oreo update recently in some markets, but it did not go so well. Despite extensive beta testing before the final build rolled out, it seems that the update is having some issues and is causing some devices to reboot and enter boot loops. Since Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge owners started complaining of bricked devices following the update, Samsung was forced to temporarily pause the update’s rollout until it figures out what went wrong and how to fix it.
Affected users flocked to Samsung forums to report the matter, and a company moderator has acknowledged that a “limited number” of devices are indeed having issues after the Android 8.0 Oreo update, rebooting all of a sudden. The Samsung representative added that the company is looking into the matter and it halted the release until it patches things up, but it will resume the rollout as soon as it can. At this point, there’s no indication as to when that might be, but it shouldn’t take too long. For those who already updated their devices with the buggy build and are now having issues, Samsung recommends visiting a Support Center to have Samsung staff restore the device to working condition.
Alternately, those who can’t go to a Samsung Support Center can try to perform a factory data reset of the phone in recovery mode. It’s worth pointing out that a factory data reset means wiping all data off the device, so users might lose some files that have not been backed up. At the same time, this does not guarantee that the issues will be resolved. Samsung notes that if the problems persist after a factory reset, users should contact Samsung Support and arrange a repair. Samsung similarly had to pull the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus back in February, as it also caused unexpected reboots. It took a few weeks for Samsung to patch the bugs and relaunch the update, so it might take a while for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge as well.
