Xiaomi has recently been teasing the launch of a selfie-focused budget smartphone under its Redmi line in the Indian market. Today the company announced via its Twitter account that the phone will see the light of day on June 7 when it will be announced at an event in New Delhi. All of the phone’s teasers talk a lot about selfies and are supported by a #FindYourSelfie hashtag, hinting at its selfie-focused nature. Reports suggest it to be a rebranded Redmi S2 Android smartphone launching in the South Asian market under the Redmi Y series. The company has teased the phone by revealing a portion of its top bezel, which appears to be similar to the Redmi S2, further backing the claim. Xiaomi had unveiled the Redmi S2 budget smartphone last week in China with a metal outer shell and an 18:9 display.

The Redmi S2 shares a lot of design elements with other Xiaomi devices launched in the recent past, especially the Mi 6X. The S2 is a budget Android smartphone featuring a 5.99-inch HD+ display with an 18:9 aspect ratio resulting in significantly thinner bezels. An octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor powers the phone that was announced in two variants – one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory and another with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. A 3,080mAh battery is also a part of the package along with Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9. The handset includes two rear cameras of 12 megapixels and 5 megapixels, while there is a front-facing 16-megapixel camera which also helps in the facial recognition feature. A fingerprint scanner is also included in the device and is placed on its back.

In China, the Redmi S2 is priced at $156 (Rs. 10,536) for the base variant while the 4GB RAM variant is priced at $204 (Rs. 13,778). The pricing for India will vary and if the report turns out to be true, the rebranded Redmi S2 will succeed the Redmi Y1 launched last year in the country. It came powered by an entry-level Snapdragon 435 chipset and was priced starting at Rs. 8,999 ($133). With the given set of specifications of the S2, it will be a major upgrade for the Redmi Y series, provided the company chooses against considerably inflating the price.
