About a week before its imminent launch, the Xiaomi Redmi Y2 has appeared on a popular benchmarking website, Geekbench. Based on the listing, the mid-range phone will include 3GB of RAM and will come pre-installed with Android 8.1 Oreo, possibly with a layer of MIUI on top of it. An unnamed octa-core Qualcomm processor running at 2.02GHz can also be seen mentioned in the listing with some previous leaks have suggested that a Snapdragon 625 SoC will be powering the device. The Redmi Y2 scored 843 points in the single-core test and 4,196 in the multi-core test of the benchmarking tool. Apart from the above-mentioned information, and the fact that the Android phone will be called Redmi Y2, the Geekbench database doesn’t have anything else to reveal about the device at the moment.

Xiaomi has already sent out invites for an event scheduled for June 7 in New Delhi where it is expected to launch the Redmi Y2. The handset is said to succeed the Redmi Y1 budget smartphone launched last year in the South Asian market. The minimal invite from the company shows a partial camera lens completed by a dotted image of a human face, probably depicting the camera’s AI-based features. Some reports have claimed that the Redmi Y2 will indeed be a rebranded Redmi S2 launched in China earlier this month. The latter comes with a similar set of specifications as mentioned in the Geekbench listing, including the OS and RAM variant, and includes a taller 18:9 display with thin bezels on the front.

At a glance, the budget-smartphone looks similar to the newly launched Mi 6X, thanks to its thin bezels, metal body, and its vertically aligned two rear cameras. A 5.99-inch HD+ display is placed on the phone’s front while the fingerprint scanner sits on the back, where the dual-camera setup can also be found. Besides being powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor, the handset comes with two RAM and storage variants – one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of flash memory and another with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of flash memory. The dual-SIM phone has a dedicated slot for both a second SIM card and a microSD card, while a 3,080mAh battery is also a part of the package. In China, the phone starts at 999 yuan (~$156) for the base 3GB RAM variant, while the pricing for the Indian model should be announced next week at its launch event.
