Motorola today released the Android 8.1 Oreo update for its mid-range Moto X4 smartphone. The firmware is being rolled out to unlocked and Amazon Prime variants of the device and carries the version number OPW28.2 for both models. Besides all of the features that come baked into the OS, the update includes Android security patches up to May 1, 2018. The Android One variant of the X4 received the said update back in March with a handful of tweaks like performance improvement, dark and light themes, and others. Motorola had unveiled the mid-ranger last October running Android 7.1 Nougat despite the fact that Android 8.0 Oreo was already out by then.

This is an OTA (over the air) update which will be slowly rolled out to users and should take some time to reach every eligible unit. The update notes mention the inclusion of a new Power menu UI and improvements to Bluetooth and notifications. Motorola also notes that downgrading to the previous OS version won’t be possible after installing the Android 8.1 update and that your phone’s data won’t be erased during the installation process, though backing it up is always recommended. You will need to follow the usual procedure to install the OTA update and you can also check for the new firmware manually from the Settings app in case you still haven’t received a notification telling you that a software upgrade is available.

Motorola made phones official late last year, with the lineup including a 5.2-inch IPS LCD panel with an FHD resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio with relatively thick top and bottom bezels. A Snapdragon 630 processor powers the Moto X4 and is paired with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of on-board storage. The phone is IP68-certified for water and dust resistance and comes with a rear-placed dual-camera setup, along with a front-facing 16-megapixel sensor. Android 8.0 started hitting the handset in December, introducing a slew of new features such as notification dots, improved autofill framework, and picture-in-picture (PiP) mode support.
