Bethesda took to this year’s E3 to announce The Elder Scrolls: Blades, the latest spin-off based on its popular role-playing franchise which is set to be released on Android and iOS devices this fall. Unlike the old J2ME games based on the series, TES: Blades is a full-fledged first-person RPG that’s meant to be much closer to the core TES experience, according to the developer. As suggested by the title itself, the game revolves around Blades, the Empire’s top agents and spies, who end up being forced into exile and have to find a new home to survive.
While city-building mechanics will hence be part of the package, single-player quests and dozens of unique storylines will be on offer as well, together with robust character customization, PvP Arena battles, and endless exploration opportunities offered by the Abyss, what sounds like a procedurally generated world where you’ll be able to quest for loot and level up your character. That particular aspect appears to draw inspiration from the original TES: Arena, a 1994 PC classic that’s still technically the largest entry in the series to date. TES: Blades will be a free-to-play mobile game with in-app purchases, though it remains to be seen whether it ends up featuring any advertising. The title will be entirely playable in portrait mode and feature a swipe-based combat system said to be extremely intuitive. TES: Blades will eventually be ported to PC, consoles, and select VR platforms, Bethesda said.
Bethesda is already offering TES: Blades pre-registrations on the Google Play Store but has yet to commit to a more precise release timeframe other than “fall of 2018.” Players keen on participating in a closed beta that’s expected to start by mid-summer are able to express their interest in doing so by referring to the banner below, with the only requirement being a compatible smartphone and a Bethesda account, though the developer has yet to elaborate on the former.
