A new Sony-branded smartphone has now landed at the FCC under ID PY7-04606A bearing no model number and only a few sparse details available. For starters, this doesn’t appear to be a device on the budget end of the Android spectrum. That’s based on the fact that, among other radio details, the Sony handset is listed as shipping with NFC. That doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility but the technology is still mostly tied with mid-range handsets. What’s more, the device appears to have a much larger battery than what is included with a typical phone designed to put affordability first. The listed battery model number is LIP1653ERPC which, upon further research, appears to be a Sony-branded 3,580mAh Li-Ion unit. Setting that aside, the company hasn’t been shipping many Android devices at that end of the price range either. As of this writing, there doesn’t appear to be a model number listed for this smartphone.
Although documentation for the device currently places most information and associated filings under strict control for the foreseeable future, there are a few details that can be garnered about the radios. According to the ‘Equipment Under Test’ documents, the Sony handheld will support GSM, WCDMA, and LTE networking as well as Wi-Fi. Bluetooth is also a part of the package but no specifications are provided for which version of the technology that will be. In the meantime, GSM connections are supported at 850 MHz and 1900 MHz while WCDMA can be used on band 2 and band 5. LTE works on bands 2, 5, 7, and 41, with hotspot capabilities on GSM 1900 MHz and band 2 for both LTE and WCDMA. Wi-Fi is dual-band via a/b/g/n/ac protocols. The FCC appears to have tested this handset with an SD card installed, which implies that one of the SIM slots or a separate slot may be included for expandable storage.
Finally, the FCC label for the new listing appears to be placed on the SIM card tray itself and that appears to be a dual-SIM configuration. For the time being, there doesn’t seem to be much to tie this presumably Android-based smartphone to any Sony’s announcements at all. So this may be a handset that hasn’t been revealed just yet and an FCC listing could indicate more information will be on the way soon.
