Vuzix has received certifications from both the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the European Commission for its new Blade smart glasses, completing the final requirement necessary to begin shipping the wearable device to developers. The Blade is the company’s next-generation set of augmented reality (AR) smart glasses introduced at CES this January. The American technology company claims that the Blade is arguably the first product to offer a large virtual screen and a lightweight build, coming in at approximately 85 grams. The Vuzix Blade AR smart glasses take advantage of the firm’s very own waveguide optics and Cobra II display engine to let you experience AR in a see-through viewing mode.

At this year’s MWC 2018, Vuzix also showcased its Blade smart glasses as part of its Blade Edge program for developers. The smart glasses feature weather updates, event notifications, a video conference tool, sports and social feeds, biometrics, directions, and a variety of other features. The device also allows users to adjust its field of view and brightness, is compatible with both Android and iOS devices, and can show location-aware imagery. With the new pair of the Blade smart glasses, users can also play their favorite games hands-free. Additionally, users can view smartphone notifications right through the AR companion app which connects the Vuzix Blade to their handsets. Vuzix also claims it has a growing ecosystem of AR applications, courtesy of its developer community that uses the open Android platform to build new apps for the Vuzix Blade. The smart glasses also allow users to conduct various tasks such as answering phone calls, view text messages on the wearable itself, take photos, or capture first-person videos.

Paul Travers, President and Chief Executive Officer at Vuzix, said the company started mass-producing the Blade smart glasses at its West Henrietta, New York-based facility and will soon start delivering the gadget to enterprise app developers based in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
