TCL has just announced its newest smartphone in the Alcatel lineup. It’s the Alcatel 1 Android Oreo (Go Edition). This is the latest smartphone from Alcatel to join the Android Go ranks, along with the Alcatel 1X that debuted at Mobile World Congress. It’s fairly bare-bones smartphone, which is why the price is just $79 here, and why it is also running Android Go, but it does still do quite a few things well.

Alcatel has packed this phone with a 5-inch, 18:9 aspect ratio display, with a MediaTek MT6739 quad-core processor that is clocked at 1.28GHz. There is also 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, with a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. This is all powered by a 2000mAh capacity battery. So as you can tell, this is one of the lowest specced Android Go phones yet, and it is also one of the cheapest. This is a phone that would be great for kids, or even parents and grandparents that don’t use their phone for more than just texting, making phone calls and maybe a bit of web browsing.

The Alcatel 1 is part of the Android Oreo (Go Edition) lineup, which means it is sporting a lighter edition of Android Oreo, and it also uses apps that are lightweight. The reason behind this, is to allow for cheaper smartphones that still offer a somewhat decent experience. In the past, a smartphone with a quad-core 1.28GHz chipset and 1GB of RAM would be crawling on Android, but Google has worked hard to make the OS a bit more lightweight, and Android GO is even lighter, so that with this 8GB of storage, you still get a decent amount of storage out of the box on a smartphone like the Alcatel 1. You can purchase the Alcatel 1 from Amazon using the link below.
