Last year we saw the Xperia XZ Premium push the boundaries of both display and camera technology, and this year they’re doing it once again. Sony’s also pushing the boundaries of what people might be willing to pay for a premium-branded device, launching the Xperia XZ2 Premium for £799, €900 or $999. What you’re getting is above and beyond many other phones in quite a few ways though, and that all starts with the 4K HDR display. Boasting Sony’s display manufacturing prowess, the 5.8-inch 4k (3840 x 2160 pixels) resolution panel sports an unbelievable 759 pixels-per-inch density, making this the most pixel-dense display of any phone released in 2018. It’s also capable of HDR playback, with incredible color accuracy via Sony’s TRILUMINOS technology, and is sure to blow anyone away while watching 4K HDR content.
Thankfully it’s compatible with YouTube’s 4K HDR playback, and while there’s no 4K support on Netflix or Amazon just yet, it’s capable of playing back HDR content with better results than you’ll see on almost any phone on the market. Sony is also packing in a new dual-camera system on the back, which supports 4K HDR video recording too, meaning you’ll not only be able to record videos in ultra-high quality 4K HDR, but you can view them natively right on the screen without any tinkering or tweaking. This is the only phone on the market that can both display 4K HDR content and record 4K HDR content, making the Xperia XZ2 Premium as unique as anything could be in 2018.
Sony has also updated the design language of the Xperia XZ2 Premium to coincide with the new ‘Ambient Flow’ language on the standard Xperia XZ2 and the Xperia XZ2 Compact. This is a much more rounded design than we’ve seen from Sony in the past, including a rounded back, a rear-facing fingerprint scanner that works in all markets including the US, and smaller bezels than last year’s Xperia XZ Premium. With support for Project Treble, we’re expecting an Android P update shortly after Google releases the finalized code, and given that the standard Xperia XZ2 already has an Android P beta, there’s little reason to think otherwise.
