In Short: OnePlus’s CEO and co-founder, Pete Lau, has just shared a new post on the company’s official forums, and in that post, he talks about the OnePlus 6T’s in-display fingerprint scanner. The company is calling that technology ‘Screen Unlock’, and the company’s CEO says that OnePlus spent a ton of time testing and developing Screen Unlock, and that it did not want to implement it into a device until it was sure that the technology is up to par. Pete Lau says that Screen Unlock not only stands for an optical fingerprint module which is placed under the display, but also a side array of software processes. The optical fingerprint module houses a small lens which is capable of registering your fingerprint as it presses down on the cover glass. The screen itself is used as a light source which outlines your fingerprint, so that the scanner itself can read it properly. OnePlus utilizes ‘Trust Zone’ found in the Snapdragon 845 in order to store fingerprint info, for security purposes. The company’s CEO says that OnePlus spend months shaving milliseconds off the unlock time, and refining the unlock animation… all that through software algorithms. Mr. Lau also said that Screen Unlock will become more accurate the more you use it. Background: Pete Lau actually confirmed that the OnePlus 6T will sport an in-display fingerprint scanner yesterday, ahead of this forum post. The company’s CEO said that Screen Unlock has been in testing for quite some time, the company first tried to implement it on the OnePlus 5T, but the module was just not there and was too large in size. A year later, the company seems to be ready to implement an in-display fingerprint scanner in one of its devices, and it remains to be seen how will it work. You probably already know that a number of companies already included an in-display fingerprint scanner in their devices, including OnePlus’ sister company, Vivo, which actually utilized such sensors in a couple of devices thus far.
Impact: In-display fingerprint scanners that we’ve seen thus far are not as reliable as regular capacitive ones. They are usually considerably slower, and not as accurate, so it remains to be seen what will OnePlus’ implementation have to offer. The OnePlus 6 has a really fast fingerprint scanner, perhaps even the fastest and most reliable out there, as it takes only 0.2 seconds to unlock the device, and it’s extremely accurate. That will be hard to beat, it remains how will Screen Unlock fare against the OnePlus 6’s fingerprint scanner, but OnePlus hopefully thought this through, and sees the benefit of an in-display fingerprint scanner.
