In Short: OPPO has just unveiled a new technology in order to boost smartphone performance, in a way. The company announced “Hyper Boost”, and OPPO refers to it as a “system-level performance boost engine”. OPPO says that Hyper Boost improves power consumption and performance of Android smartphones, while the company also mentioned that this technology has been in development for years. Hyper Boost actually optimizes resource allocation on Android in order to help the system consume less power, and perform better in general, and that is especially helpful when Android devices have a lot of application and heavy tasks to handle at the same time, so it should be really helpful for power users.

OPPO says that Hyper Boost “enables real-time two-way dialog between applications and system resources”. This new technology gets familiar with your usage scenarios and app behavior in order to optimize the device’s performance, in other words, in order to optimize resource allocation. The company says that Hyper Boost consists out of three parts: System Engine, Game Engine, and Application Engine. As far as System Engine is concerned, OPPO says that Hyper Boost actually delivers system-level optimization on both Qualcomm and MediaTek platforms (no matter which of the two chips is in use), and that System Engine provides over 50 solutions for optimization and utilization of Qualcomm’s and MediaTek’s hardware. In addition to that, System Engine also brings 20+ optimizations for various software scenarios, and 20+ optimizations for software behavior in general. OPPO says that System Engine optimizations can help Android load up apps 31.91-percent faster than usual.

In regards to Game Engine, OPPO says that it provides 11 optimizations for the most popular mobile games on the market, such as Honor of Kings and PUBG. Game Engine utilizes “polymorphic network acceleration technology”, and can intelligently distribute traffic between Wi-Fi and cellular data network channels. Game Engine can reduce network latency, which will result in a better gaming experience. OPPO has worked with Tencent and Netease in the past, and used game engines such as Unreal and Unity, so the company does have some background when it comes to gaming optimization. And last, but not least, Application Engine. Application Engine brings “dramatic acceleration”, says OPPO, acceleration in 39 common usage scenarios for “heavy users” says the company.

Background: The company has been working on Hyper Boost for years, and is claiming that this is the way to go when it comes to optimizing Android. What the company did not clarify is, when will Hyper Boost become available, and which devices will take care of it. If we had to guess, we’d say that it will roll out to OPPO’s Color OS platform, but we don’t know to which versions of it exactly. It is possible that Hyper Boost will become available to future versions of Color OS only, while, on the other hand, OPPO may push it out to some of the current versions as well. We’ll have to wait for the company to share more info regarding Hyper Boost, because, at the moment, we do not have any availability info whatsoever.

OPPO is one of the three well-known Chinese companies under BBK Electronics’ ownership, it’s a sister company to both Vivo and OnePlus, and all three companies have been prospering in recent years. OPPO and Vivo are doing incredibly well in China and some other Asian markets, while OnePlus is really popular on a global scale. OPPO is well-known for its VOOC fast charging solutions, and the company’s latest Super VOOC Flash Charge fast charging solution is the fastest on the market, by far. This charging technology is included in the OPPO Find X Lamborghini Edition, and it can charge that smartphone’s battery from 0 to 100-percent in only 35 minutes. That would be extremely impressive even if the OPPO Find X Lamborghini Edition had a really small battery, but that device comes with a 3,400mAh unit, so you can see why Super VOOC is the fastest charging tech out there, at least for mobile devices. Super VOOC is actually expected to make its way to OnePlus devices in the future, even though it will be called differently, of course. The OnePlus 7 could debut this tech, though nothing has been confirmed just yet, of course, as the device is expected to arrive in mid-2019, as not even the OnePlus 6T arrived just yet. Speaking of which, the OnePlus 6T almost certainly will not sport Super VOOC in any shape or form, in case you were wondering.

OPPO has been working on both 5G technology and AI as well. The company showed off “3D Structured Light” and “TOF” camera-related tech a while back, while it has successfully tested 5G signaling, and data linking, for which it used a refitted OPPO R15 smartphone. Last year, OPPO was ranked as the number four smartphone manufacturer in the world, while it managed to claim second place in China, at least according to IDC. OPPO is currently active in over 30 countries, while it has six research institutes on a global scale, the largest one is located in Shenzhen, which is not exactly surprising.

Impact: Some of you may compare OPPO’s Hyper Boost to Honor’s GPU Turbo technologies, even though the two techs are not exactly the same. Both have a goal of optimizing smartphone performance, and both do affect it in scenarios where smartphones are under a heavy load, but they achieve that in different ways. Both of those technologies also optimize power consumption, so it would not exactly be surprising if you see them as similar. OPPO is expected to announce when will Hyper Boost start rolling out to its smartphones, and that’s when we’ll be able to see what kind of an effect it has in some usage scenarios. It doesn’t seem like Hyper Boost will have a huge effect when it comes to regular smartphone usage, at least as far as performance is concerned, but when playing games, especially online, you should see a difference, same goes for when your phone is under a really heavy load. All in all, stay tuned, OPPO is expected to share more Hyper Boost availability info in the near future.
