OPPO has just announced that two of its smartphones have arrived to Europe, the OPPO RX17 Pro, and RX17 Neo. The OPPO RX17 Pro is actually the OPPO R17 Pro which was introduced back in August in China, but OPPO decided to rebrand it for its arrival to Europe. The OPPO RX17 Neo is not the OPPO R17, but it is quite similar to that phone. Both of these handsets got announced in Milan, Italy, and OPPO refers to the OPPO RX17 Pro as its ‘flagship product’, even though the OPPO Find X is also available in Europe, and is technically a more powerful smartphone than the OPPO RX17 Pro. The OPPO RX17 Neo is inferior to the OPPO RX17 Pro, but it’s also a mid-range smartphone, and both devices sport really thin bezels, even though they do differ when it comes to the design, but you’ll notice that only if you flip them around, as they look the same from the front. Both of these phones feature the so-called ‘teardrop’ display notch, while the corners of their displays are rounded. A very thin ‘chin’ is present below the display on both phones, while both devices are made out of metal and glass. That being said, let’s first talk about the OPPO RX17 Pro, shall we.
The OPPO RX17 Pro features three vertically-aligned cameras with an LED flash below them, while you will also notice OPPO’s branding on the back as well. The OPPO RX17 Pro features a 6.4-inch fullHD+ (2280 x 1080) AMOLED display with a 19:9 display aspect ratio, while Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6 protects it. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 710 64-bit octa-core processor fuels this smartphone, and that is one of Qualcomm’s most powerful mid-range processors, if not the most powerful one. The OPPO RX17 Pro comes with 6GB / 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while you will find two SIM card slots in this phone as well. Android 8.1 Oreo comes pre-installed on the OPPO RX17 Pro, while OPPO’s ColorOS 5.2 skin comes pre-installed on top of it. As far as cameras are concerned, you’ll find 12-megapixel (f/1.5-f/2.4 variable aperture, OIS, 1.4um pixel size), 20-megapixel (f/2.6 aperture), and a TOF 3D camera (for “3D photography” with AR applications) on the back of this smartphone, while a single 25-megapixel camera (f/2.0 aperture, Sony’s IMX576 sensor) is included on the front of the device. The OPPO RX17 Pro sports an in-display fingerprint scanner, while a 3,700mAh battery is also included in this package, and it can take advantage of OPPO’s SuperVOOC fast charging (10V/5A). The phone comes with Bluetooth 5, while it measures 157.6 x 74.6 x 7.9mm, and it weighs 183 grams.
The OPPO RX17 Neo, on the other hand, sports a 6.41-inch fullHD+ (2280 x 1080) AMOLED display with a 19:9 display aspect ratio, and Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6 protection. The company says that this phone offers a 91.5-percent screen-to-body ratio, just like the OPPO RX17 Pro. The OPPO RX17 Neo is fueled by the Snapdragon 660 64-bit octa-core processor, which is inferior to the Snapdragon 710. The phone includes 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while you will find two SIM card slots on the inside of this phone. Android 8.1 Oreo comes pre-installed on the device, with OPPO’s ColorOS 5.2, same as on the OPPO RX17 Pro. 16-megapixel (f/1.75 aperture) and 2-megapixel (f/2.4 aperture) cameras are included on the back of this phone, while a single 25-megapixel (f/2.0 aperture, Sony’s IMX576 sensor) camera sits on the phone’s front side. This phone also comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner, while it has a 3,600mAh battery, Bluetooth 5, and it measures 158.3 x 75.5 x 7.4mm, and weighs 156 grams.
The OPP RX17 Pro comes in Emerald Green and Radiant Mist color variants, and its 6GB RAM variant is priced at €599 ($686), we still do not have a price tag for the 8GB RAM model. The OPPO RX17 Neo, on the other hand, comes in Astral Blue and Mocha Red colors, and it costs €349 ($400). Both devices will be available in Italy, France, Spain, and the Netherlands starting from November 16. The company did not mention any additional countries in Europe, nor did OPPO say anything about the OPPO RX17 Pro’s and RX17 Neo’s arrival to the US, we’ll have to wait for some other occasion in order to hear more about that.
Background: The OPPO R17 Pro was introduced in China back in August 2018, and this variant that arrived to Europe is basically just a rebrand, we’re looking at the very same phone with software that has been adapted for international markets. The OPPO R17 Pro aka RX17 Pro is more or less a flagship phone with a mid-range processor. The OPPO RX17 Neo is an adapted version of the OPPO R17, specs of these two phones are somewhat different, but they look the same from the front, specs are really close, and the difference in design can only be spotted on the back, as the OPPO RX17 Neo sports a different-looking camera setup.
Impact: Both the OPPO RX17 Pro and RX17 Neo have AMOLED displays, solid camera hardware, premium build, and even in-display fingerprint scanners, which is not something you see in mid-range smartphones all that often. Their price tags are also quite competitive, so it will be interesting to see how popular will they be in Europe. These devices did arrive to Europe, but as you can see in the first section, their availability will be limited to several countries, at least at first, there is always a chance that OPPO will opt to expand their availability, and the initial sales will probably play a huge part in the company’s decision. The OPPO RX17 Pro is considerably more affordable than the OPPO Find X, and that phone is inferior to the OPPO Find X, but in case you can deal with a tiny notch, a bit less powerful processor, and no sliding camera mechanism, the OPPO RX17 Pro is a solid alternative, at least on paper, as we did not have a chance to test this phone out just yet, unlike the OPPO Find X, whose review you can check out by clicking here.
