Sony Mobile’s Vice President of Marketing, Don Mesa, just got interviewed by Digital Trends, and he shared some insight as to what Sony’s plans are moving forward. The company hasn’t really been doing great in terms of smartphone sales, that has been the case for quite some time now, despite the quality of its products, but it seems like Sony is looking to change that moving forward. This interview took place at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2019 in Las Vegas, and it seems like Sony is gearing up for MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona for next month. In any case, let’s see what Don Mesa had to say.
Don Mesa said that the company has been “undergoing a lot of change”, so it seems like Sony is reshuffling things. Sony Mobile actually got a new head of development, Shigeki Ishizuka, who came from the company’s camera division, a really successful part of the company. The company is hoping that he can help Sony Mobile move up the ladder, and captivate users with its product, and thus increase sales of its smartphones. Mr. Mesa flat out confirmed that Sony Mobile plans to announce products at the Mobile World Congress, he said that the company will present a product which will mark the very first step in Sony Mobile’s new direction. That being said, Sony will almost certainly announce the Xperia XZ4 at MWC, at least if the company is planning to stick with its usual release cycle. The Xperia XZ4 leaked a number of times thus far, and judging by those leaks, its bezels will be thinner than the ones on the Xperia XZ3, while the phone will be made out of metal, and sport a tall 21:9 display aspect ratio. The phone will pack in a huge display, a 6.5-inch display is rumored, while the Snapdragon 855 will also be a part of the package, along with other specs. Android 9 Pie will come pre-installed, the phone will include at least 6GB of RAM, while a side-facing fingerprint scanner is also expected. Much more info is rumored, but we’ll see how many of those rumors will end up being true.
Mr. Mesa also touched on 5G, he said that “5G is a challenge”, and that the company does not want to rush things, as it wants the experience to be spot on before it releases a 5G-enabled handset. Mr. Mesa said that the company is planning to offer a much better camera experience with its upcoming flagship, presumably the Xperia XZ4. The Xperia XZ3’s camera is not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but a company like Sony can do much better than that, and Mr. Mesa is fully aware of that. We’re talking about a company that makes mobile camera sensors for the vast majority of well-known smartphone OEMs, so… yeah, it can do better. On top of everything. Mr. Mesa also hinted that the Xperia XZ4 Compact may not launch at all. He said that the company stuck with the “Compact” line for a long time because of the ease of use, but that people want a lot more surface area for their content now, which leads us to believe that the Xperia XZ4 Compact will not launch at all, unfortunately, as having options is great, and not everyone likes huge phones. A the end of his interview, Mr. Mesa said that changes are coming, but that we should not expect drastic changes, or anything of the sort.
