A likely unit of the Sony Xperia XZ4 has been tested using the popular benchmarking application AnTuTu, and it suggests that the Snapdragon 855 chipset will power the device. According to the recent leak, the smartphone, which has the model number I8134, scored 395,721 points, which is similar to the scores obtained by other handsets that will feature the same SoC. However, this score is still significantly higher than the 343,051 points obtained by the Snapdragon-equipped variant of the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus, and the 368,480 points reached by the Lenovo Z5 Pro. This benchmark result corroborates with a recent rumor that also claims that the Xperia XZ4 will sport the latest flagship chipset from Qualcomm.
Background: This newest benchmark result widens the gap between the scores obtained by the Snapdragon 855 chipset and the results achieved by competing SoC offerings. For example, the variant of the Samsung Galaxy S10 powered by the Exynos 9820 chipset scored 325,067 points in the AnTuTu benchmark, which is more than 70,000 points lower than the score of the Xperia XZ4. Furthermore, the Kirin 980 chipset found inside the Huawei Mate 20 and the A12 Bionic SoC, which powers the iPhone XS, both obtained lower scores than the Snapdragon 855 chipset. The Kirin 980 managed to reach 309,425 points in the AnTuTu benchmark, while the A12 Bionic chipset scored a little more than 356,000 in the same test. In general, these benchmark results hint at the performance offered by the Xperia XZ4, although software optimizations could still significantly affect the user experience of the product.
Aside from the chipset that powers the device, earlier leaks already supplied information about the Xperia XZ4. The smartphone will include 6GB of RAM according to recent reports, and it will be available in two hardware variants that have either 64GB or 256GB of internal flash storage. Earlier leaks show that the handset will sport a 6.55-inch display with an aspect ratio of 21:9 from LG Display, although there is little information about the display technology that Sony will incorporate into the device. According to recent reports, the smartphone will also feature a 3.5-millimeter audio jack and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor sandwiched between the volume rocker and the power button. Earlier rumors also suggest that the Xperia XZ4 will have three rear cameras, and there is also a possibility that the handset may have a dual front-facing shooter setup. Unlike recent products released by other device makers, the design of the upcoming flagship smartphone offering of the Japanese tech firm still features a traditional bezel above the screen of the handset rather than a display notch. Recent reports show that the smartphone will have a 3,900mAh battery, and it will likely ship with Android 9 Pie pre-installed. However, Sony’s proprietary skin will likely run on top of Google’s operating system.
Impact: If the leaked benchmark results are correct, the substantial difference in the performance between the different handsets powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset suggests variations in either the hardware design or software features of the three smartphones. In the case of the Xperia XZ4, Sony may have included cooling systems within the device that allowed the SoC to stay cool for longer periods of time, resulting in increased performance reflected in the benchmark result. Earlier rumors say that Sony will unveil the Xperia XZ4 at Mobile World Congress 2019 next February, and more information about the device will become available before the scheduled launch of the smartphone.
