Leaked Sony Xperia XZ4 Cases Indicate Triple Camera Setup, Ridiculously Tall 21:9 Display

Mobile Fun has listed a number of cases from Olixar which are made for the Sony Xperia XZ4. These cases are currently available for purchase (mostly available for pre-order), which is a bit strange since the Xperia XZ4 has not been announced just yet. This is quite common among case manufacturers. As they do get the dimensions for the new device from the manufacturer ahead of the announcement. So the measurements here are likely true, but there could be some changes. According to these cases, the Xperia XZ4 will feature the triple-camera setup on the back, as previously rumored. And it also seems to sport a much taller display, looks to be a 21:9 aspect ratio here.

Previous rumors appear to be true, but a grain of salt is still needed

These case renderings do show off a number of features that we have seen in previous leaks for the Xperia XZ4. Which includes that triple camera, the tall 21:9  display, the fingerprint sensor being moved to the side, and so forth. But this is still something that needs to be taken with a grain of salt. As mentioned, case manufacturers like Olixar are given dimensions of the phone early, by companies like Sony. However, they do not get images of the device. So they are often told that a cut out will be on the back or the sides, but not told why, only how large it will be. These images are usually taken from other leaks that have appeared on the Internet – sometimes, you can even see the watermark for the site that leaked it, in the images. So while it does look to add up right now, it is still possible that this is not how the Xperia XZ4 will appear.

Sony moving the fingerprint sensor back to the side of the smartphone is a bit strange. Seeing as it was unable to use that fingerprint sensor on the side in the US for a few years (we’re not sure why, but theories suggest it was due to a partnership with Verizon that fell through), and then it finally got added to the back last year. Which meant those in the US had a working fingerprint sensor. So seeing it come back to the side is an interesting move, and we’ll have to wait til Mobile World Congress to find out if it will come to the US, and work in the US.

Sony will likely announce the Xperia XZ4 next month at Mobile World Congress

Next month, the biggest mobile trade show of the year is going to be taking place in Barcelona. That would be the one and only Mobile World Congress. It’s the annual trade show that happens at the end of February, and where the biggest smartphones of the year are announced. Sony typically announces its Spring flagship at the event – with its fall flagship coming at IFA in August. In fact, the Xperia XZ2 was announced last year at this same event. The Xperia XZ4 is expected to be one of Sony’s best smartphones in the last few years, as it has gotten rid of the large bezels, and it is also going to a multi-camera setup. Which might be a bit surprising for Sony fans. Considering Sony has stuck with a single camera, all the way up to the Xperia XZ3 released last fall – only the Xperia XZ2 Premium sports a dual-camera sensor. With Sony making the sensors that almost every single smartphone uses, it’s no surprise that Sony didn’t need that second sensor, but seeing it jump to a triple-camera setup means that it does see the need for it.

At Mobile World Congress, Sony is going to have a ton of competition for attention. Samsung won’t be announcing the Galaxy S10 at the show, instead it is doing an event about a week before the show for the Galaxy S10. So it will still command a ton of attention, not to mention the other big names in the smartphone industry are there and will be making announcements. Like Huawei, ZTE, BlackBerry, Alcatel, Motorola, HTC and many more. It’s going to be a pretty interesting trade show for Sony and others that will be there. Mobile World Congress takes place February 25 through the 28 from Barcelona, Spain. The majority of the announcements will take place on February 23 and 24 though. There’s going to be a ton of smartphones that are going to be coming to the US (and many that won’t), being announced there. Of course, we’ll keep you up-to-date on all the announcements.
