HMD Global has come to Barcelona with a slew of new smartphones. It has just announced three new Android smartphones, and a feature phone for good measure.
On tap at Mobile World Congress for the Nokia brand is a new Android Go smartphone in the Nokia 1 Plus. Then there are two new Android One smartphones in the Nokia 3.2 and Nokia 4.2. Finally there is a new feature phone called the Nokia 210.
Nokia 1 Plus – Android Go For Everyone
The Nokia 1 Plus is a low-end smartphone. It’s running the Android Pie version of Android Go, which is now smaller giving users a lot more storage and RAM out of the box. Not only did Google make it smaller, but it’s also faster now. All things we can appreciate on a device like this.
HMD Global gave the Nokia 1 Plus a much larger display this time around, with a 5.45-inch, 18:9 aspect ratio display. It is powered by the MediaTek Helio P60 processor, and that is paired with 1GB of RAM and 8GB or 16GB of storage – there will be two models available. Definitely not the most powerful smartphone on the market, but for many, it’ll get the job done.
Nokia 3.2 & 4.2 – Notching the Mid-Range
The Nokia 3.2 and Nokia 4.2 are very similar smartphones. These are both running Android One. And there are a few differences when it comes to the specs. But these both also have the dedicated Google Assistant button now. This is something that LG was doing last year, and it seems to have caught on. HMD Global says that they added the button to make it easier for users to bring up the Google Assistant when needed. And it can now see what’s on your display and be pretty helpful.
HMD Global also has its face unlock technology (nothing special here, it’s just using the front-facing camera, so no crazy 3D face unlock) on these phones. So when you pick up the phone and press the Google Assistant button, it will unlock and start working. This is a big deal since Google Assistant is pretty unhelpful if you have not unlocked your smartphone.
When it comes to specs, the Nokia 3.2 sports a 6.2-inch Full HD+ display, powered by the Snapdragon 429 chipset with either 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage or 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. There is also a 4000mAh capacity battery included. On the back there is a 13-megapixel sensor with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.
On the Nokia 4.2, there is a larger 6.5-inch Full HD+ display, powered by the slightly more powerful Snapdragon 43 chipset with the same 2GB/16GB or 3GB/32GB configurations, and there is also a 4000mAh capacity battery inside. The Nokia 4.2 gets a second 2-megapixel camera on the back to go with the 13-megapixel camera. There is the same 5-megapixel front-facing camera though. Both of these sport tear-drop notches. It also has a fingerprint sensor and NFC for Google Pay, something that the Nokia 3.2 does not have.
The Nokia 4.2 does stand out a bit more in its design. It sports a polycarbonate backside and a metal frame. Which is a rather interesting combination, but it looks really nice, and also stands out. This does make the Nokia 4.2 look high-end without having a high-end cost or being super slippery.
Nokia 210 – Facebook is now on feature phones
Finally, there is the Nokia 210. This is the company’s latest feature phone, and while many may think feature phones are gone, they are not. The Nokia 210 is another feature phone that is built like a tank – you can literally throw it across the room. It is available in a ton of colors, and HMD Global says that the color goes all the way through the phone, so if you chip it, you won’t see the real color underneath the paint.
With the Nokia 210, users are going to have internet access at their fingertips. There is internet available through the Opera Mini Browser, and Facebook (of course) is pre-installed.
The Nokia 210’s battery will last nearly a month, bringing back the Nokia of old, when its smartphones never died.
Pricing & Availability
HMD Global has not announced not announced which Nokia smartphones will make their way into the US, but have given us the pricing in US dollars. The Nokia 210 will be $35 , while the Nokia 1 Plus will be $99. The Nokia 3.2 will be $139 for the 2GB/16GB model, and $169 for the 3GB/32GB model. Finally, the Nokia 4.2 will be $169 for the 2GB/16GB model and $199 for the 3GB/32GB. HMD Global will soon announce which of these will come to the US, but they will be available in Europe in the coming weeks.
