A recent certification issued by the Brazilian telecommunications regulator ANATEL shows that the LG G8 ThinQ will feature a 3,400mAh battery. The government agency recently tested a battery with the model number BL-T41, and in comparison with the company’s other smartphones, the capacity of the power pack is around 400mAh larger than the battery included with the LG G7 ThinQ. On the other hand, the battery is also slightly larger than the power pack included with the LG G6 and the LG V40 ThinQ, which had a capacity of 3,300mAh. Furthermore, the battery of LG G8 ThinQ is smaller than the battery included with the upcoming LG V50 ThinQ 5G, which will likely have a 4,000mAh power pack.
Background: The LG G8 ThinQ is one of the two devices that the company will reportedly launch next month. Aside from the latest addition to the LG G series, recent rumors claim that LG Electronics will also announce its first 5G smartphone offering, which the company will market as part of the LG V series.
While the LG G8 ThinQ will not support the latest communications standards, it will still feature several improvements compared to the LG G7 ThinQ. Among the enhancements that LG may include with its upcoming device is the Sound on Display technology, which aims to use the screen to produce sound. The inclusion of this technology may allow the manufacturer to remove the earpiece in the upcoming premium device offering. Furthermore, another recent report suggests that LG Electronics will incorporate a 3D camera to the LG G8 ThinQ. This hardware should improve the speed and accuracy of the handset’s face unlock technology, although the South Korean tech firm may also use the imaging module to enhance the augmented reality features of the smartphone.
There is little information about the specifications of the LG G8 ThinQ, although a recent render detailed the design of the smartphone. The renders show the device will sport a similar design with its predecessor, the LG G7 ThinQ, and it suggests that like the previous generation handset, the smartphone will include a notch above the display, which seems to contain a single front-facing camera and several additional sensors. Interestingly, a recent report says that the LG G8 ThinQ may sport a waterdrop notch rather than the broader indent seen in the company’s earlier products. Meanwhile, the back of the device features a horizontally-arranged dual rear camera setup. Beside the rear shooters is the LED flash, and directly below the two cameras is the fingerprint scanner.
A recent report from South Korean media also notes that the LG G8 ThinQ will likely be the last LG G-branded handset that LG Electronics will release. Rumors suggest that the LG V series will take over as the flagship smartphone lineup of the company, and the branding of the tech firm’s first 5G smartphone supports this notion. If LG puts an end to the LG G series, reports claim that it will likely be replaced by a new handset series.
Impact: While the LG G8 ThinQ includes a smaller battery than the V50 ThinQ 5G, the device only features LTE connectivity, which means that the handset will have lower power requirements than the 5G handset. Aside from offering a slightly larger battery than its predecessors, the newer hardware that the company may include with its upcoming smartphone offering could result in longer battery life for the device.
