LG has announced its first 5G smartphone, the V50 ThinQ 5G. It’s largely based on the V40 ThinQ that it debuted last year, but sports the newer Snapdragon 855 chipset. LG has not yet confirmed which carriers will be carrying the V50 ThinQ 5G, but Sprint is likely one of its partners, seeing as Sprint announced that it would have an LG 5G smartphone this year.
The LG V50 ThinQ 5G is very familiar. LG essentially took the V40 ThinQ body and gave it a new chipset and a larger battery. One might wonder why LG decided to go with a V50 ThinQ 5G over a G8 ThinQ 5G, especially considering the fact that the G8 ThinQ was announced today. The reason for this, according to LG, is that the V40 ThinQ had a larger body, making it easier for LG to add in that new chipset and 5G modem, but also give it a larger battery. Since 5G is going to be pretty tough on batteries, giving it a larger battery is a great thing.
Besides sporting 5G connectivity, LG did add some other features to the V50 ThinQ 5G, that is not available on the V40 ThinQ. This is mostly in regards to the camera. The reason for this: the Snapdragon 855 enables these new features, so it made sense to include them in the new V50 ThinQ 5G.
Included in the camera with the V50 ThinQ 5G, you are getting portrait mode in video. Allowing you to adjust the Bokeh in your video, in real-time. This is also available on the G8 ThinQ. Now, LG did not add a Time of Flight sensor to the V50 ThinQ 5G, so you won’t be getting the Hand ID and other features that the G8 ThinQ has.
As far as specs go, the LG V50 ThinQ 5G has a 6.4-inch Quad HD+ OLED display, with the Snapdragon 855 chipset, with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. There is a micro SD card slot available for expanding storage as well. There is also a 4,000mAh capacity battery inside the LG V50 ThinQ 5G, because the camera is now completely flush on the back of the device, LG had room for more battery capacity. Which is needed for a 5G smartphone.
LG is targeting two markets with the V50 ThinQ 5G, and that’s South Korea and the US. LG believes that those two will be the first two markets with 5G connectivity. In the US, Sprint and Verizon will be carrying the V50 ThinQ 5G. There’s no word on which carrier(s) in South Korea will be carrying the device. But Sprint is the first carrier to offer a 5G smartphone from LG, in the US.
