Sony To Replace "Compact" Series With Xperia 4; Kind Of

Sony’s executive indirectly confirmed that the “Compact” lineup will not make an appearance at the MWC 2019, which turned out to be true, but the Xperia 4 may replace the Compact lineup, at least according to a new report from Japan.

This information has been circulating the Esato forums, including an image that you can check out down below. As you can see, this image shows the Xperia Z5 Compact, XZ2 Compact, and Xperia four sketches, along with their measurements. If there is any truth there, the Xperia 4 will offer the same width as the Z5 Compact and XZ2 Compact, even though it will be considerably taller.

The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact featured a 4.6-inch display, while it was 127mm tall. The Xperia XZ2 Compact, on the other hand, included a 5-inch panel, and was 135mm tall. The Xperia 4 will, if there is any truth there, feature a 5.7-inch display, and be 149mm tall, mainly thanks to its 21:9 display aspect ratio which we’ve already seen on the Xperia 1, 10, and 10 Plus.

Based on this sketch, the Sony Xperia 4 will include a rather noticeable “forehead”, as its “chin” will be much thinner. This is actually pretty much the same design language that we’ve seen in the Xperia 1, 10, and 10 Plus, Sony’s devices that were introduced during this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, back in February.

Sony’s executive said that the Compact lineup is going away as consumers prefer larger displays, which may have been a mistake on Sony’s part, as many people hailed the company’s Compact lineup primarily for its size. In any case, if the Xperia 4 dimensions info ends up being true, Sony found a way to offer a rather compact phone with a 5.7-inch display. Truth be said, this phone will be considerably taller than the Xperia XZ2 Compact, but it will be just as narrow, so it will be far more usable with one hand than something like the Xperia 1.

There is one problem here, though, the Xperia XZ2 Compact was a flagship-grade phone with a flagship processor, and based on rumors, the Xperia 4 will not go down that path. The Xperia 4 is rumored to ship with the Snapdragon 710 64-bit octa-core SoC, which is Qualcomm’s mid-range processor, and nowhere near the company’s flagship Snapdragon 855 chip.

It is unrealistic to expect that the Xperia XZ2 Compact consumers will be interested in the Xperia 4, as those consumers are looking for a flagship-grade alternative. It is possible that the Xperia 4 is not even aimed at those people (as Sony never said it is), and is aiming at those of you who want a compact phone with a large display, but do not necessarily need a flagship-grade device, as the Snapdragon 710 is a really capable chip in its own regard.

Previous rumors suggested that the Xperia 4 will include 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, while a 2,800mAh battery is also said to be a part of the offering. A 2,800mAh battery doesn’t really seem like the best idea considering the screen size of the Xperia 4, but maybe Sony is counting on its own software optimizations and the power efficiency of the Snapdragon 710, we’ll see.
