A new report details the specifications and design of an upcoming mid-range smartphone offering from Sony called the Sony Xperia 4. Rumors indicate that the Japanese handset maker will incorporate the Snapdragon 710 chipset into the Xperia 4.

Furthermore, recent leaks claim that the smartphone will sport 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal flash storage and that a 2,800mAh battery will power the device. The Xperia 4 will also have a dual rear-camera setup, although there is currently no information available about the handset’s front-facing selfie shooter and the rear camera’s imaging sensors.

Recent leaks also supplied information about the design of the Xperia 4. Reports state that the device will feature a 5.7-inch display with a resolution of 2520 x 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio of 21:9. Furthermore, according to rumors, the handset will not have a headphone jack, and it will have a length of 149.5mm, a width of 65mm, and a thickness of 9.4mm. There will be four color options for the Xperia 4, which are silver, red, purple, and black, and the leak also claims that the smartphone will feature water and dust resistance.

This handset will supplement Sony’s mid-range handset lineup, which currently includes the recently-unveiled Xperia 10 and the Xperia 10 Plus. However, the latest leak suggests that the Xperia 4 will target a more premium segment of the smartphone market compared to the other two smartphones, as evidenced by the more powerful hardware included with the rumored device.

While both the Xperia 10 and the Xperia 10 Plus feature the same amount of internal storage as the Xperia 4, the two mid-range handsets feature less powerful chipsets, with the Xperia 10 and the Xperia 10 Plus sporting the Snapdragon 630 and the Snapdragon 636 SoCs respectively. Furthermore, the Xperia 4 features only 3GB of RAM. However, the Xperia 4 features a more compact display and a slightly smaller battery compared to the other two handsets.

Sony is targeting different segments of the smartphone market with its recently-launched and upcoming devices. While the Xperia 4 and the Xperia 10 series target the upper and lower mid-range segments of the smartphone market respectively, the Xperia 1 and the Xperia L3 appeal to customers looking for flagship and budget handsets, respectively.

Moving forward, users should expect that Sony smartphones will feature improved displays and cameras as a result of the restructuring of Sony’s corporate structure that allowed for more effective collaboration between the different divisions of Japanese electronics giant. While the company’s flagship handset will be the first to receive upgraded screens and imaging sensors, these specifications will possibly trickle down to Sony’s less expensive devices after some time.

While the leak already detailed the design and specifications of the Xperia 4, there is little information available about the availability and pricing of the handset, although, at the very least, Sony will likely sell the smartphone in its home market, Japan. Given the more powerful hardware of the device, it will probably be more expensive than the $429 price tag of the Xperia 10 Plus, though not by much. More information about the device will probably surface soon, while we still do not know when will the phone become official.
