YouTube Music only recently rolled out support for Google Home, but it has been available on Sonos all along. And if you own a Sonos speaker or two, this is going to be a much better way of listening to YouTube Music, than using Google Home.
Today, we’ll be walking you through setting up YouTube Music and how to play it on Sonos. It’s actually pretty simple, but it is hidden, so many may not know that it was even possible.
Add YouTube Music to Sonos
First up, you’re going to need to add YouTube Music to your Sonos account. So you’re going to need to download the Sonos app from Google Play, and log in.
Once you have logged into the app, you will be able to go over to the “More” tab on the right side, at the bottom of the app. Then tap on “Add Music Services”.
Now scroll through the list to Find YouTube Music to add it. Since these are all in alphabetical order, it’ll be near the bottom – and it’s a pretty long list. Once you find YouTube Music, simply tap on it and it’ll then take you to YouTube Music so that you can authorize your account to Sonos. This essentially allows Sonos to actually play music from your account. It won’t make any changes.
Once that is done, you can give your YouTube Music account a name – this is mostly in the case of you having more than one YouTube Music accounts in the Sonos app.
Playing YouTube Music on Sonos
Now that you have YouTube Music all set up on your Sonos account, playing music is pretty simple.
Go back to the “browse” tab, which is the second from the left. This is also the default tab when you first open the app.
Within that tab, you’ll find all of your audio accounts that are set up on Sonos. That includes YouTube Music, Spotify, Audible and really any other accounts you’ve added.
Now tap on the YouTube Music listing. From there, it will take you into YouTube Music, where you can choose what you want to play. Whether that’s something from your Library, New Releases, Top Charts, or anything else. It’s not quite as robust as using the YouTube Music app, but it does work pretty nicely. And since you can’t play to Sonos from the YouTube Music app, this is the only way to do it, unfortunately.
That’s one place where Spotify really stands out, as you are able to play on different devices from within the Spotify app.
Wrap Up
YouTube Music is still missing quite a few features, but luckily Sonos is not one of them. Considering Sonos is usually an after thought for Google, as it is focusing more on Google Assistant and Google Home. Now those that do have Sonos speakers in their home and do also subscribe to YouTube Music, can play their music on much better speakers and enjoy multi-room audio with YouTube Music.
