According to a report from Japan, the Sony Xperia 2 may actually arrive in both LCD and OLED variants. The Sony Xperia 1 is essentially a brand new smartphone, and yet rumors regarding its successor have already started. That is not exactly all that surprising as the Xperia 2 is expected to arrive in the third quarter of the year, if Sony intends to stick to its release cycle.

Sumahoinfo received an anonymous tip regarding the company’s upcoming flagship, presumably called the Xperia 2. In addition to noting that the phone may ship in both LCD and OLED variants, which is quite odd, the source also shared some additional spec info. It is not noted whether the LCD and OLED variants will be different in terms of specs, so we’ll just assume that the display technology is the only difference between the two.

The Sony Xperia 2 is rumored to sport a smaller display than the Xperia 1, and will thus ship with a 6-inch panel, compared to a 6.5-inch one on the Xperia 1. This is also not surprising as the Xperia 1 is extremely tall thanks to its 21:9 display aspect ratio, so Sony may be looking to make it a bit shorter by decreasing display size.

The source also notes that Sony does not intend to include wireless charging in the Xperia 2, which is also not a surprise as the Xperia 1 did not offer such functionality either. The phone will ship with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, as per the provided info, while a 3,200mAh battery will be included on the inside. This actually means that the battery will be smaller compared to the Xperia 1, which is plausible having in mind that its display will be smaller according to this rumor.

The Sony Xperia 2 will include a triple camera setup on the back, and that is pretty much all the info that was shared at this time. The device will probably resemble the Xperia 1 quite a bit in terms of the design, as Sony basically never makes a bit difference between two models that launch in the same year.

It remains to be seen if the phone will retain a 4K panel if its display ends up measuring 6 inches, as Sony may opt to include a QHD+ display due to a smaller display. That is not a likely option, but it may happen, who knows.

Truth be said, this rumored info does seem to be a bit off, we don’t really see Sony decreasing display size all that much with its next flagship, so maybe this info is related to some other device that the company will release. Also, releasing the same phone with LCD and OLED panels also doesn’t make all that much sense, unless some of the other specs are different as well. That would make sense if Sony opted to release a more affordable, and a premium flagship, or something of the sort.

The Sony Xperia 2 launch is still months, and months away, as the Xperia 1 did not even launch globally just yet. The Xperia 1 will become available really soon, though, so we’ll see exactly what the phone has to offer.
