Courtesy of OnLeaks and CashKaro, a few renders and a 360-degree video reveal the yet to be announced Sony Xperia 2. These leaks come before the Xperia 1 announced back in February is even available. The Xperia 2 is expected to launch in September of this year.

The renders reveal the device’s design and specs. For starters, the phone will have a 6.1-inch display with the same 21:9 aspect ration of the Xperia 1. The entire device will measure out at 158 x 68.3 x 8.3mm.

The phone will be powered by 6GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 855 processor from Qualcomm, and will also have a 3,000mAh battery with wireless charging. It appears Sony will continue with the vertically aligned three-camera setup.

Sony unveiled the Xperia 1 back in February at Mobile World Congress. That device featured a 6.5-inch display and otherwise looks the same as the Xperia 2. It doesn’t make a lot of sense for Sony to be working at releasing another phone so soon when the Xperia 1 is not even available for ordering yet in the United States. Neither phone shows any signs of bleeding edge technology in the design department. Relatively slim bezels house the front-facing camera and speaker. The design doesn’t look bad by any means it’s simply just not as ambitious as other manufacturer’s releases.

Smartphones are getting taller and bigger as time goes on, and the Xperia 2 definitely follows this trend. The tall aspect ratio makes the device narrow and slender. The design is a bold move by Sony and is aimed at enhancing media consumption for users.

The Xperia 2 also follows the trend of being leaked well ahead of the official announcement. Devices now can hardly pass through the internet without being shown to the entire world. Renders and photos often leave nothing left to be desired, though companies do usually keep a surprise or two up their sleeves for the official announcement.

Sony is continuing with its recent trend of putting out two flagships per year, even though there isn’t much difference between the two. Typically Sony releases one flagship in February at Mobile World Congress and a second in August at IFA. That appears to be what it is planning to do again this year, with the Xperia 1 and Xperia 2.

Sony has never had tremendous success in the mobile industry. It previously reported a loss of $140 million in its mobile division, but it is still working to compete in the mobile industry due to the success of its other businesses like PlayStation and its cameras, which are offsetting the mobile division’s losses. The company is not giving up though, and appears to be going all in with these 21:9 aspect ratio displays that they first showed off earlier this year on the Xperia 1, 10 and 10 Plus.

The renders for the Xperia 2 do look pretty promising and do offer a few changes for Sony, including a return to a flat backside, something that the Xperia 1 did not have. Not to mention a vertical triple camera setup on the rear. Considering Sony is a camera company, and is now using its Alpha team to make these cameras, they should do pretty well.
