Dota Underlords is finally in open beta, after the team behind the development of the game at Valve recently announced that it would be doing a closed beta to test the game for a number of players in smaller regional groups. The beta is not only now open but it’s open across all platforms where the game is due to release, which includes mobile devices running on Android.

This means if you’re eager to test out the game you can freely do so without having to be the owner of a Dota 2 battle pass. It also means you should be prepared to be demoralized a little bit unless you’re in full understanding of how this game works, as it comes off as exceedingly difficult to play and requires knowledge of the characters and their abilities.

What makes it harder is that choosing your characters has to be done before each round starts. You only have a limited amount of time to pick who you want on the match board before it begins, and if you don’t get your characters picked before that time and place them on the board where you want them to be, you will most certainly lose the round.

This is definitely not a game for anyone who isn’t willing to either learn how the game mechanics work or already has a knowledge of what you need to do. If you’ve already got plenty of skill and experience with playing strategy games, then you may be just fine. The moral of the story here though, is you’re likely better off playing through the tutorial of the game at least once.

Yes, there is a tutorial, which means there is a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel here. So if you’re not familiar with Auto Chess or Dota Underlords or have any experience with strategy games like this one, there’s no need to panic.

If you like Dota 2 and want to try your hand at Dota Underlords, the tutorial mode should help you along enough to get you started with grasping how to play this game and have more chances at winning each round, though practice and more practice is not something to be dismissed.

Once you’re done with the tutorial, if you chose to partake in it, you’ll have a multitude of options to further your skills. You can start with playing against bots which should be a little bit more forgiving and it’ll allow you to play against an opponent that isn’t guided like in the tutorial.

From there you can move on to playing against other players in real-time and in multiplayer ranked matchmaking if you think you’re skills are up to par. Dota Underlords is also supporting cross-platform play, so that means you can play with a friend if they play on PC or iOS while you’re playing on your Android device.

Dota Underlords is completely free to play, and while there aren’t any in-game purchases at the moment, this is still a beta and there may very well be some micro transactions later on when the game fully launches. Valve has not yet shared an exact release date for the full launch.
