Sony is expected to announce a new flagship called the Xperia 2 during the upcoming IFA. A previously leaked render courtesy of a leaker with a good track record provided a good look at the phone. And now, a case has popped up online, which corroborates that leaked image.

Of course, sometimes case makers get ahead of themselves and make products based on leaked specifications and schematics. Moreover, there is no way of knowing how legitimate the new leak is. Thus, take this report with a pinch of salt.

If you view the leaked render and the case side by side, they seem like a perfect fit, which means the Xperia 2 might actually have a triple camera array on the upper left side, a side mounted physical fingerprint reader, and a speaker at the bottom after all.

The design seems heavily inspired by the Xperia 1, which was launched in February during MWC. This is Sony so a similar design is not too far out of its wheelhouse, as the company is notorious for sticking to old designs when its competitors are busy one-upping each other with various innovations such as display cutouts and in-display fingerprint scanners.

Sony has shaken a few things up. For instance, the rear camera system, which sits in the middle of the Xperia 1, has been shifted towards the upper left corner. The upcoming phone is also rumored to be more compact than the Xperia 1. Apparently, the 21:9 display aspect ratio will be maintained, but the display size might be trimmed down to 6.1 inches.

It is also worth mentioning that Sony is reportedly planning to release two variants of the Xperia 2, one of which allegedly bears the model number J8010. If past reports are anything to go by, it will have a display with a Quad HD resolution of 3840 x 1644  pixels and the aforementioned ratio. It is believed that this particular model will sport an OLED display.

The other variant presumably has the model number J8210 and it will apparently have an LCD display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It appears that this model will be targeted at consumers who want a price-friendly device. It is not known yet where else Sony plans to cut corners on the relatively affordable handset.

Moving on, the Xperia 2 is also expected to have smaller dimensions of 158 x 68.3 x 8.3 mm. In contrast, the Xperia 1 sports a massive 6.5 inches display and measures 167 x 72 x 8.2 mm. The leaked images also seem to imply that there will be no headphone jack on the new phone.

Coming to the internals, the Xperia 2 is tipped to come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. It will apparently have 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The phone is rumored to pack in a 3,000mAh battery and while some reports say that wireless charging will be a part of the package, it is highly unlikely as the Xperia 1 did not have this technology.

Sony usually releases one flagship during the MWC and another at the IFA, which means Xperia 2 will be unveiled in Berlin in September.
