The Redesigned Play Store Is Hitting Devices Again

Google’s redesigned version of the Play Store seems to be making its way out to devices again. This is after having appeared, then disappeared, more than once already since its original rollout. Users on Reddit are noting the arrival of the new look. According to the thread the updated design is also rolling out to multiple regions and various devices.

One user in the comments states that they have received the new design in Brazil. Multiple users are seeing it pop up on the Pixel 3a, while one user also states it’s shown up on their Pixel 2 XL. There doesn’t appear to be any rhyme or reason to the launch of the redesign. So, it’s likely that Google is simply pushing the update out in small batches of users but not worrying about locale or hardware type.

Google first started pushing out this new design way back in May. Around May 31 to be exact. Following this initial push it began removing the design and reverting people back to the style that most users currently see. This happened sometime in June, and then back on August 2 it started showing up for users once again.

This leads us to now where more people are starting to see the look of the Play Store change. This probably means that this is more of a wide rollout and could reach most users over the course of the next week. Of course, Google hasn’t officially mentioned anything. It may never announce the new design’s wider rollout either. Instead, it may simply choose to push it out to all users and once finished just be done with it without saying a word.

To recap, the new design has quite a few noticeable changes. These are easily visible too. The first thing users will probably notice is the removal of the green header bar up top. The entire look of the Play Store in this new design is basically white. There are green accent colors for text and icons though. Users will also notice that header colors for their corresponding sections have been removed.

Speaking of the icons, the ones above the for you, top charts, news and other categories have been removed. But, Google has added icons to the main sections. In addition to moving games, apps, movies & tv, and books to a bottom navigation bar, all of those tabs now have icons above their headers.

Install buttons on pages are also now larger with this new design. In the new design they take up nearly the width of the entire screen. In the old design, they’re still fairly sizable but they sit off to the right side. There’s no telling how long it will be before the rollout is completed. Google may also choose to revert it again as it has done so before.

If you prefer the new design, there’s nothing to really do but wait. It’ll show up as fast or as slow as Google wants it to, as this seems to be a server-side thing that Google needs to flip the switch on.
