YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium are valuable services to subscribe to if you don’t want to watch videos or listen to music laden with ads, the problem for some especially if you’re a student on a tight budget, is that monthly subscriptions for services can start to pile up and become expensive.
For a limited time however YouTube is trying to save students a little bit of that precious money by giving them discounts to both YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium. The discount? Completely free, at least for the first three months. Now that’s a pretty decent savings.
The three free months of service does come with a couple of restrictions. First off this is a trial, and since it’s limited you won’t be able to grab this deal forever. You will also only be able to choose three months free for one service or the other, so students should pick which ever they would tend to use more often.
The other good news is that whichever you choose the other will still be pretty inexpensive compared to the normal cost as YouTube offers student plans for those that are eligible students meeting the requirements. This means you can’t be on a student plan without being a student.
If you are a student, getting onto the student plan only costs $4.99 instead of the normal $9.99 according to the tweet from the official YouTube Music page. That being said the signup page for the YouTube Premium student plan says the service costs $6.99 with a normal cost of $11.99. This might make things seem a little unclear and that’s understandable.
The difference is each of the two services has a separate cost. So, if you’re wanting YouTube Music Premium you can either pay $9.99 a month or $4.99 a month if you’re an eligible student, and if you want YouTube Premium then you either pay $12.99 a month or $6.99 a month if you’re an eligible student.
Another restriction in place is that you cannot already have a subscription set up or have had one set up before. The rules state that you have to be a new member as this is directed at first-time subscribers only, so even if you had YouTube Premium over a year ago the chances are slim to none that you would be eligible to take advantage of this offer. That said you can still try your luck.
The offer is only available to students in select territories and YouTube Music doesn’t mention how long the trial will be on offer so if this is something that you’re interested in then it’s better to get in on it as soon as you can. When you go to the signup page YouTube puts you through an application that determines whether your country or school meets the guidelines, the only other notable restriction is that you have to be a full-time student at a higher education institution.
