Sony has just announced a new flagship smartphone at IFA 2019 in Berlin. The rumored Xperia 5 arrived, and Sony refers to this phone as a “compact addition” to its “flagship smartphone family”.
The Sony Xperia 5 is considerable smaller than the Xperia 1
The Xperia 5 is, indeed, considerably smaller than the Xperia 1. This smartphone features a 6.1-inch display, while the Xperia 1 includes a 6.5-inch panel. How can a phone be called compact with a 6.1-inch display? Well, we live in such times. With thin bezels, and a good aspect ratio, it is possible.
The Xperia 5 is considerably more compact than most flagships out there, it’s narrower thanks to 21:9 aspect ratio. That, in addition to thin bezels and display size, actually makes it possible to use this phone with one hand. Well, you’ll still have to do some hand gymnastics to reach the very top of the phone’s left side, but it’s much easier to do so than with most flagships out there.
The Sony Xperia 5 is made out of metal and glass. The phone resembles the Xperia 1 in terms of the design, but it’s not identical, that’s for sure.
The Xperia 5 includes a different camera placement on the back, while the bezel thickness is not the same. This compact smartphone offers really thin bezels, and its rear-facing cameras are placed in the top-left corner.
The Sony Xperia 5 features a side-facing fingerprint scanner, that sensor is included on the right. Right above it lies the volume rocker, while a power / lock key is located below it. There is one more physical key included on that side of the phone, a dedicated camera shutter.
6.1-inch fullHD+ OLED display, 6GB of RAM & 3,140mAh battery
The phone features a 6.1-inch fullHD+ CinemaWide HDR OLED display. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 64-bit octa-core processor fuels this phone. The Xperia 5 includes 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage (expandable up to 512GB via a microSD card). It has a single SIM slot, and that’s a nano SIM slot, in case you were wondering.
A 3,140mAh battery is included in this package, and it supports Xperia Adaptive Charging. Battery Care feature is also included here, and it also supports USB Power Delivery fast charging. The device is IP65/68 certified for water resistance, while Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6 covers the phone’s display.
Three 12-megapixel cameras are included on the back of this smartphone. The main camera (26mm lens, 1.4um pixel size) comes with an f/1.6 aperture lens, and both OIS and EIS. The other two have an f/2.4 aperture lens, and one of them also comes with both OIS and EIS. Those two cameras come with 16mm and 52mm lenses.
A single 8-megapixel camera (1.12um pixel size, f/2.0 aperture lens, HDR) is included on the front side of the phone. The Xperia 5 comes with a bevvy of software camera features, of course.
Bluetooth 5.0 is a part of this package, as is an NFC chip. USB 3.1 port is included on the bottom of the phone, and this is a Type-C port. Dolby Atmos support is here, while the phone features a stereo speaker setup. Stereo recording is possible, while Qualcomm’s aptX HD audio is also included.
Available next month in four color options
The Sony Xperia 5 supports Sony’s Dynamic Vibration System, and comes in four color variants. The phone will be available in Black, Gray, Blue, and Red colors. The Xperia 5 measures 157 x 66 x 7.6mm, and weighs 164 grams. The company said that the phone will become available next month, in October. We still do not know how much will it cost, though.
