Sony’s press conference kicks off later today, and it seems like a new flagship phone is coming. The alleged Xperia 2 leaked a couple of days ago, but it seems like that was the Xperia 5, not Xperia 2.

Why is it called the Xperia 5?

Where did the Xperia 5 name come from? Well, your guess is as good as ours. Some details regarding the phone did surface, though.

If you take a look at the provided image, you will see what seems to be a test presentation for the Xperia 5 launch. You can clearly see the name of the phone in the image, and the device itself.

This image also confirms that an OLED display with 21:9 display aspect ratio will be a part of the offering. HDR certification is also noted, as is Dolby Atmos support.

This image was shared by David Baptista da Silva via Twitter, while he also added some additional info. He says that the Xperia 2 will be available in Europe in October, while pre-order will start next week.

Sony teased a compact smartphone recently

This will not be a compact phone that Sony teased, though, at least not according to the source. He notes that the phone is “still oversized”, comparing it with the Xperia 1.

The Sony Xperia 2 will be available in Black, White, and Magenta color variants. The phone will also have full support for wireless DualShock 4 controller, that support will be exclusive to the Xperia 1 and 5.

Sony released a rather interesting teaser quite recently. That teaser video teased the “Xperia excellence in the palm of your hand”.

Many people instantly guessed that the company is planning to launch a compact smartphone at IFA 2019. Well, that may still be the case, but it seems like that device won’t be the Xperia 5 that we’re talking about here.

The Sony Xperia 5 seems to be a direct successor to the Xperia 1, though we’re wondering why didn’t Sony use the Xperia 2 name if that’s the case.

Not much info surfaced regarding this phone’s specifications, but the device will probably be made out of metal and glass. Three cameras will be included on its back, while a side-facing fingerprint scanner will also be included.

The phone will almost certainly be fueled by the Snapdragon 855 Plus 64-bit octa-core processor. It will include plenty of RAM, and hopefully a large battery. Android 9 Pie will probably come pre-installed on it, unless Sony managed to develop Android 10 with its Android skin already, which is unlikely.
